Davy Walsh

5724_edited.png

Player #424 for Aston Villa, David John Walsh, known as Davy Walsh, played as a centre forward for the club.

Davy played for Villa between 1950-51 and 1954-55 making 113 appearances and scoring 40 goals.

Davy was born in Waterford, Ireland on 28 April 1923 and made his debut appearance for Villa on Saturday, 13 January 1951 at the age of 27.

Villa had signed Davy from West Bromwich Albion for a fee of £25,000 in December 1950 having begun his career with Limerick United.

Davy was described as ”An unobtrusive player who put teamwork first and whose combination with other players was key to his success. Davy had a great shot and in and around the penalty area was a most dangerous attacking threat for Villa with the knack of making the most of even a half chance. Indeed Davy gained a reputation for scoring goals when least expected to do so.”

Davy had shown his goalscoring prowess with West Brom having hit 94 goals in 165 league games for Villa’s neighbours however he wasn’t quite such a prolific goal-getter at Villa.

Davy made his Villa debut in the 3-0 home win over Fulham on January 13, 1951, and scored his first goal for the club in the 2-1 victory over Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday, 31 March 1951.

Davy’s strongest goalscoring season for Villa was in 1952-53 with 13 goals in all competitions, the following season he hit 11 before playing more of a bit part role in 1954-55 as his Villa career wound down.

Davy played his final game for Villa on Monday, 11 April 1955 aged 31 and after his 5 seasons with Villa he moved on to neighbours Walsall for a fee of £2,500 in July 1955.

Davy had played under Villa managers George Martin and Eric Houghton

Davy passed away in Thurlestone, Devon on 14 March 2016 aged 92.
