Tommy Thompson

Player #425 for Aston Villa, Thomas Thompson known as Tommy Thompson, and nicknamed Toucher, played as a forward for the club.

Tommy played for Villa between 1950-51 and 1954-55 making 165 appearances and scoring 76 goals.

Tommy was born in Fencehouses, Houghton-le-Spring on 10 November 1928 and made his debut appearance for Villa on Saturday, 23 September 1950 at the age of 21.

Villa had signed Tommy from Newcastle United for a fee of £12,500 earlier in September 1950 and he went on to play 29 times, scoring 10 goals in his first season with the club.

Tommy’s was reunited with his former manager at Newcastle when George Martin arrived from St James’ Park as a belated replacement for Alec Massie in December 1950.

Tommy was described as “A clever and hardworking player, a first class inside forward, Tommy’s anticipation and perfect ball control control when moving at full speed often caught the opposition off guard and off balance and his good shot often helped him prevail over his foe to good effect. At his best Tommy was capable of winning any match for Villa.”

In his 165 appearances, Tommy scored three hat-tricks and over his 5 seasons he was a regular starter and goalscorer.

Tommy’s most prolific season came in 1953-54 when he scored 21 goals in 31 games.

Tommy’s form for Villa was indebted to the creative prowess of Danny Blanchflower and a dynamic partnership with Johnny Dixon.

Unlike the loyal, influential and legendary Dixon however both Blanchflower and Thompson made moves for pastures new.

Tommy played his final game for Villa on Wednesday, 4 May 1955 aged 26 before moving on to Preston North End for a fee of £28,500.

Tommy had played under Villa managers George Martin and Eric Houghton.

Tommy passed away on 15 September 2015 aged 86.
