Roy Chapman

Player #438 for Aston Villa, Roy Clifford Chapman, known as Roy Chapman, played as a forward for the club.

Roy played for Villa between 1953-54 and 1957-58 making 19 appearances and scoring 8 goals.

Roy was born in Kingstanding, less than 4 miles from Villa Park, on 18 March 1934 and made his debut appearance for Villa on Saturday, 14 November 1953 at the age of 19.

Villa had signed Roy from Kynochs Works FC in November 1951 as an amateur and he signed professional forms with the club in February 1952.

Roy was described as “A player built on slender lines, Roy made a burgeoning reputation for himself in Birmingham works football before joining Villa.”

Roy was an interesting player, two footed which in itself was a rarity but with an aggressive edge to his play yet he was blessed with natural ball control skills that he deployed to good effect, crucially however he lacked pace and that would prove his downfall at Villa.

Roy was used sparingly and only ever featured for Villa in the league, indeed it was not until his final season, 1957-58 that he made his most appearances - eight - scoring twice.

During his time with Villa they won the 1957 FA Cup however Roy, having not featured in the campaign, did not receive the honour of an FA Cup Winners medal.

Roy played his final game for Villa on Saturday, 9 November 1957 aged just 23 after 4 seasons with the club before moving on to Lincoln City later that month.

Roy had played under Villa manager Eric Houghton.

Roy passed away in Stoke on Trent on 21 March 1983 aged just 49.
