On This Day
Villa finish 1950-51 in joint 15th - their highest position since October as the recovery from George Martin concluded with their biggest win of the season.
In total, across 20 League games, Martin had delivered 22 points compared to 15 points in 22 League games under the ill-fated management committee.
That the Villa hierarchy had persisted with a structure that was leading the club to certain relegation, waiting until the middle of December to make the change, simply compounded the myriad of mistakes they made in the first four months of the season.
There is little doubt that without the belated appointment of George Martin Villa would be playing in Division Two in 1951-52.
Not only had Martin changed the course of the club but he had also significantly boosted squad quality with the arrivals of Danny Blanchflower, Derek Pace, Davy Walsh and Peter Aldis, whilst getting the best out of Tommy Thompson, Johnny Dixon and co.
Already there were high hopes for 1951-52 with Maritn at the helm.
