MATCH TIMELINE

ON THIS DAY

Villa end the season on a win, their second victory in three to finish sixth in the League, one place below their 1921-22 position having recorded eighteen wins, ten draws and fourteen defeats in forty two division one games.

Villa’s season can be summed up by two runs of polar opposite form - two wins in twelve games between November and January - followed by two defeats in thirteen from January to April, and but for an end of season wobble - two defeats in the last four - fifth place or better would have been theirs.

Meanwhile, in one of the relatively few arrivals and departures of the season, forward John Roxborough, 21, made his final Villa appearance before moving on to Stoke in February 1924 having scored two goals in twelve appearances since his debut in February.

KEY MAN

Arthur Dorrell, scored Villa's final goal of the campaign to end the season on a win, their second victory in three to finish sixth in the League, one place below the 1921-22, Saturday, 5 May 1923.
