What they Said

**Are you close to signing Donyell Malen?**

"The most important thing is that we are playing tomorrow. But we are in the transfer window and we are trying to do some movements. One of those movements is the possibility to sign Malen. In case Malen signs for us, it is close, we have to leave one player, which is Jaden [Philogene]."

**Are you close to signing any other players?**

"We are alert and we want to always be ready to improve the squad with the players and, of course, sometimes some players want to leave us for different circumstances as well. We are moving forward with some circumstances like I am telling you from today until the last day of the window.

"If we are changing one player, Malen and Jaden, that’s the first. Maybe two or three players more, we can do another deal of some players leaving and some players joining us."

**How difficult is it to prepare for Everton after David Moyes was recently appointed?**

“Of course, every match we are playing has been difficult, playing away more difficult. Our challenge is how we can compete away, because the last matches we played away in Premier League, we didn’t work, we didn’t get points, and tomorrow is our challenge.

“It’s difficult, because as well, it’s Everton with a new coach, and of course I think they are going to be – the crowd and the players – very motivated, excited as well, with [David] Moyes, because before he was a very successful coach there with them.

“But we have to try to focus on our match, our gameplan, our idea to impose on the field, respecting them. Overall, maybe some tactical work they are going to change, but I think the players they are playing more or less, tomorrow they will be on the field defending Everton.

“Of course, we respect their players, we respect their stadium, we respect a new coach with a new idea, and I respect as well the difficulty we are going to face tomorrow. But, with everything, like I am explaining the difficulties, we are confident, and the opportunity we have tomorrow to try to change our bad results we have achieved in the last matches.”

**What are you expecting from Everton?**

“One area we have [is] how he was playing with West Ham, and another area we have is trying to understand individual work with the players they have, with their skill, how they were more or less playing in the last matches.

“But of course, the mix we are trying to understand, with the new idea and style [of] David Moyes, and as well with the players they have.”

**What is the latest injury news?**

"Pau Torres, John McGinn are not available for tomorrow. Different injuries and different times for them to start again training with us. Barkley is two or three weeks more. McGinn will need one week minimum to be with us to train and play. Pau Torres is longer, six to eight weeks.

Carlos is not fit. He is still being out of the team with a small injury. Emi Martinez trained this morning feeling good. In case tomorrow morning he is feeling good, he will be [in the team]."

Unai Emery, pre-match.

**What are your thoughts on your team’s performance?**

"It was very important today to win. We have broken our bad spell in the league away from home. We want to be more consistent in the table. We are trying to be all the season, more or less, to have the possibility to get the target for the league and this result was very important.

"We played the first half better than the second half. We created two very good chances we didn’t score. We played the second half controlling less than the first half, but we scored one goal.

"We dominated defensively their attack and we competed very well in the second half defensively. We deserved to win, which is very good for our confidence."

**Are there signs that Ollie Watkins is getting back to his best?**

"Ollie always responds on the field, sometimes not with goals but always with his work. Today he did it and he had a good chance in the first half but he kept going. He then scored a fantastic goal."

**That was your first clean sheet in an away league game this season. This is something to build on…**

"We are happy and the clean sheet is very important, but the most important thing is to win. We are conceding a lot of goals. More than normal. I don’t know exactly why.

"Sometimes we make mistakes or because the opponent is better than us. Sometimes we are weak defensively. Today we showed that we are stronger than normal and in the last matches we played away. Through this clean sheet, it is the first objective."

**Did Boubacar Kamara’s performance show how important he is for you?**

"Fantastic match. Fantastic. He is getting progressively better after a long time injured. His work and his capacity is increasing. It is fantastic. He showed that again today. For us he is a very important player."

**Ollie Watkins had a nice moment with the away fans after full-time - that must be great for his confidence?**

"The most important always with the players is the commitment they have to work on what we need on the field. The strikers have to score and they have to try to be offensively close to our attack to score goals or get assists.

"We’re happy because his work is fantastic to be able to always come back, to fight for the second action from another player. It is good because we won and it is good as well because he scored. It is good as well because after this clean sheet we have to analyse again how we can get stronger."

**Will Donyell Malen be in contention to play on Saturday?**

"If everything goes well, tomorrow [Thursday] he joins us [training]. We are excited as well how he can help us. He is coming in, changing with Jaden Philogene. Hopefully we can get his best."

**How hard is it to juggle the different competitions you're competing in?**

"We have started the year really fantastic, winning two matches at home against West Ham and Leicester. To get confidence away is very important. We really focused on this match to recover our consistency. Today we added a little bit more confidence for the players and the team. Also, how we can manage this Premier League always being close to the top eight teams."

"It's a big win. We knew beforehand we had to win and get through this drought away from home.

"It's such a tough place to come, and we were scrapping in the second half but those wins are sweeter than the ones where you win comfortably.

"My job is to provide and Ollie [Watkins] movement is so good. He is so good at holding the ball up in the channels and taking the pressure off.

"We defended the box really well. We had to be strong and resolute and we were outstanding defensively. We've got three wins in the new year and we will keep pushing on."

Morgan Rogers.
