What they Said
**Unai, what are your thoughts on the performance?**
"The game plan, we are always planning but we are not always being successful. Today how we started creating goals, we were doing good press and the first five or 10 minutes we were getting some corners. It was important for the confidence we got. We were aggressive and waiting for our moment.
"They had two chances to score in the first half and we were defending. The game plan was to get a good position and when we were building up to stop them and progress with the ball.
"We did better in the second half, we stopped them and that was the key. We started creating some chances we needed and the confidence was increasing for us and their confidence was going down. It was fantastic how players responded on the field to what we worked on before.
**Will you use Kamara and Onana more often in that double pivot?**
"When we signed Amadou, we were struggling in the last three months of the last season without Kamara and we needed another player to play as a number six. When he was recovering it depended on how Kamara responded. He has responded very well. High level. The second plan was to sometimes play with both players, understanding our idea and style to get in our structure our capacity to play well offensively and defensively. Youri Tielemans was higher than normal. We can add more options with the players.
**What did you make of Morgan Rogers' performance**
"I am demanding of him. He has responded very well, being consistent. How he played 90 minutes, scoring goals, helping the team in the process we were building up with the defenders and midfielders. We needed to connect. He was really doing a fantastic job in this situation. One of the qualities he showed was his drives. He did a fantastic drive, he broke the lines and we could get through him. He scored a fantastic goal.
**Did you prey on City's lack of confidence?**
"Before the match I thought that in case we were responding well, in case we were feeling confident we could get the performance we wanted with the players. The first half we didn’t work completely because we were defending so low. In the second half we were getting more in the attacking third and the consequences were that we scored and the confidence increased more. We played with more personality in the second half and defensively we did a fantastic work in 90 minutes.
**What made City vulnerable?**
"We were starting the match trying to press strongly and in the first minute we did fantastic. We created the first chance through it. In 90 minutes you have to do more things, with and without the ball. Manchester City are a little bit under the confidence they had normally. The second half was different, we dominated and we scored. Through those circumstances they were feeling worse than even in the first half.
**Jhon Duran continues to score...**
"He arrived two years ago. He is in a process. Two years ago we lost here 4-2 to Arsenal and were demanding for the striker to be close to the box and Jorginho scored. The minute 60 or 70 today, they had the ball in the box and Duran was there taking the ball and starting our transition.
"This is the example. It is good. Two years ago we asked him to do it, now he is doing it. He is scoring too. I think he has big potential and his mixing as well, with the idea we have tactically. I think he is understanding better, his commitment is better than the last two years. He was improving but not getting the level we wanted, now he is there. With Ollie we have to use both but it is very good news for me, the club and the team. They are performing.
**Can you finish above City this season?**
"It is day 17, we have 28 points, trying to get balance in the table. City are behind us but they are going to get better in the next weeks. We have to try to keep our mentality, to think about the next match and think about the challenge of everything we are facing. We were seventh, my objective now is the next match at Newcastle and trying to keep being consistent more away like we were last year.
**How is Diego Carlos?**
"He has a small pain for a kick he received in a training session. Yesterday we tried to train with him, but he couldn’t train. I think with more days resting, today and tomorrow, he will be available for the next match in Newcastle.
Unai Emery post-match.
"We knew it was going to be difficult, they have not had results, but we knew they were going to come firing.
"We knew we needed a reaction in the same way as they did.
"To a man I thought we were outstanding and I think we deserved the win. I try to thrive in big games and I want to show what I am about - it is nice to perform in the big games.
"Sometimes I will do the hard bit and then struggle to find that bit of quality and have that composure. This season I have squandered a few chances that I would have liked to score.
"It felt tougher than it probably looked. They make you work and it is so demanding out of possession. We knew we had to be on it from start to finish. On the counter-attack we were good and that's probably why we won the game.
"Every day he pushes me, he doesn't let me have a second off. He wants the best for me and that's perfect for me. We have a good working relationship, I am not the only one he has improved. I want to keep going on that trajectory and see where it takes me."
Morgan Rogers.
"We played really well, some really good football and defended when we needed to.
"I saw the space and just tried to pass it as good as I could, so I'm really happy about it.
"I was a bit freer in the role my manager asked me to play in. The fact we were on the ball more meant that we could play our game.
"It is always calculating the risk, if you want to stay on the ball and be brave. But we really deserved the win. We showed we can play good football."
Youri Tielemans.
