Team News
Unai brings Jaden Philogene-Bidace in (his first start since beating Barrow in the League Cup in August 2021) to replace Leon Bailey presumably to provide some protection for Ezri Konsa who continues at right back. Diego Carlos - subject to much criticism last time out - retain his place as Matty Cash returns to the squad after 6 games out with injury.

🗒️ | 13’ All Bayern so far, ominous at present
🗒️ | 14’ Neuer races 40 yards off his line to clear Villa’s attack
💥 | 17’ Villa break and Dayot Upamecano clearly fouls Ollie Watkins as the last man, unbelievably the referee doesn’t even award a free kick when it’s a clear red card offence. UEFA standard refereeing strikes again
💥 | 17’ Another foul on Ollie Watkins playing on the shoulder sees Upamecano carded but he shouldn’t even be on the pitch
⚽ | 21’ Goal! 1-0, Pau Torres, Assist by Lucas Digne but was it offside?
🎥 | 23’ VAR deems they were offside, to be fair Lucas Digne was
❗| 26’ Chance! Morgan Rogers releases Ollie Watkins who cuts back to Onana but his shot is straight at the ‘keeper
🔁 | 27’ Sub off, Jacob Ramsey, Sub on, Leon Bailey. Ramsey succumbs to injury once again as Villa are forced into a reshuffle
💥 | 30’ Another Munich foul, this time from Coman but Villa have settled and are looking the more fluent side despite Bayern having missed the opportunity to give Kane a tap in
🗒️ | 33’ Villa are putting their feet in just like Wolves, Ipswich and Wycombe, maybe there’s something to this inelegant side of the game
🗒️ | 34’ Great defending on the wing stops Bayern from causing a threat
🗒️ | 37’ A lull in the game to Villa’s benefit but Bayern push up high to keep the pressure on, clearly there is an arrogance to their play from playing also-rans week in week out, Villa needn’t be overawed
🗒️ | 38’ Martínez makes a finger tip save to prevent Bayern going ahead from a ridiculously good long range strike
🗒️ | 39’ Bayern contnue to surround Vills each time they get the ball and their crowding out tactics work a treat, no momentum possible from Villa currently
🗒️ | 41’ Villa though still build patiently before a silly Bayern dive cons the ref
💥 | 42’ Total madness as the Bayern player goes through Jaden and the referee gives nothing
💥 | 42’ Kane fouls Onana and another clear yellow card is avoided by the referee much to the frustration of the Villa players. This is a very poor performance from European officials yet agaon
💥 | 44’ Another Bayern foul, another free kick, they look like they are going to get away with this with Radu Petrescu in charge, really poor officiating here.
💥 | 45’ Almost unbeleivably if what has happened had not already gone before the backtracking Jaden is punished by the referee as the defender leaps into his trajectory. Where do they get these officials from? They make Stuart Atterll look competent.
🕒 | 45’+2 Aston Villa 0-0 Bayern Munich
🗒️ | 46’ Musiala comes on for Coman, great, at least it shows we had them scared
🗒️ | 46’ Neuer hoofs it a la Wolves
🗒️ | 47’ Villa break down the left after great tenacious player to win the corner, Jaden is doing well
🗒️ | 48’ Terrible clearance from Neuer is saved by an offside flag
💥 | 49’ Yet another Dayot Upamecano foul on Watkins, no punishment, is this kid going to do a Koeman and score the winner?
🗒️ | 50’ Konsa clears at the back post in Bayern’s first attack of the second half
🗒️ | 52’ Bayern keeping the ball as their desperation sees Kimmich appeal for hand ball for a ball he fired straight at Konsa’s elbow, corner, embarrassing
🗒️ | 54’ Kimmich’s corner goes straight out of play
💥 | 54’ Another foul and Villa’s frustration is all too much on the touchline
🗒️ | 56’ Ping pong in the area as a series of weak Bayern shots are cleared
🗒️ | 56’ Villa break but somehow Bayern are seemingly doubling up on every forward player, good discipline
🗒️ | 59’ Onana is injured after his first half troubles as Kadan also comes on for Bailey with the sub subbed (injury),
🔁 | 59’ Sub off, Leon Bailey, Sub on, Ian Maatsen
🔁 | 59’ Sub off, Amadou Onana, Sub on, Ross Barkley
🗒️ | 60’ As an side it’s incredible how much physical punishment Onana takes from his opponents
💥 | 61’ More poor refereeing as play is pulled back unnecessarily to Morgan Rogers’ cost
🗒️ | 62’ Tempting fate but Villa look totally in control here
🗒️ | 63’ Musiala runs at the defence, takes a one two and wins a corner, fabulous play, he’d be much more suited to an Emery team
🗒️ | 64’ Jaden doing the little things really well, clever kid
🟨 | 65’ At last! A yellow card for a foul on Ollie Watkins, this time it’s not Upamecano but Gnabry, meanwhile Sané comes on
🗒️ | 66’ Bayern break but it’s so offside it is embarrassing, Villa are showing them up here
🗒️ | 67’ It’s JD time
🗒️ | 68’ Such competent defending sniffs out a Bayern attack in the box before Ollie Watkins is relieved from his battering by Jhon Durán
🔁 | 69’ Sub off, Ollie Watkins, Sub on, Jhon Durán
💥 | 70’ This referee… awards a free kick for a non foul from Tielemans that pales into insignifcance as to what has gone before… Bayern noticeably trying to slow the game
🗒️ | 72’ A long ball from Martínez releases Jaden before a truly fortunate foot or excellent tackle saves the corner
🗒️ | 73’ Three Bayern men around Barkley win the ball in midfield
🗒️ | 74’ Villa break before another cynical Bayern challenge under the referee’s nose
🗒️ | 75’ Paulinha comes on… what has Kompany the tactician said? “you know english football, go on and score”
🗒️ | 75’ Laimer goes down like a sack of spuds… typical Germany play from a Swiss
🗒️ | 79’ Fabulous ball into Jhon Durán from Pau Torres who beats Neuer from outseide the box, totally and utterly deserved
⚽ | 79’ Goal! 1-0, Jhon Durán, Assist by Pau Torres
🗒️ | 82’ You have to hand it to Neuer, he’s a bit of a special ‘keeper as he nods down a clearance to his defence
🗒️ | 83’ Bayern’s first genuinely clean and good tackle sets them on the break before a fabulous point blank save from Martínez but it’s offside anyway
🗒️ | 85’ Kompany throws on attacking subs… fair play to him
🗒️ | 86’ The pressure Bayern put on the Villa players is something to behold, only occassionally legal but then one assumes they get away with it in the Bundesliga but impressive nonetheless to buy the referee’s largesse
🗒️ | 88’ Villa clear from Bayern’s posessional pressure but it comes back and it’s yet another easy pick up from Martínez
🗒️ | 90’ The third official or fourth or sixth shows 4’ of injury time
🗒️ | 90’ Martínez makes a genuinely excellent save this time before going down with ‘cramp’. That would have been a wounder.
🟨 | 90+1’ Booking, Ian Maatsen, not sure why yet
🗒️ | 90+2’ Villa hoof but it comes back
🗒️ | 90+3’ Bayern in possession around the penalty area as the ball bounces and hits Diego Carlos’ shoulder for which the referee decides to issue a yellow card
🟨 | 90+3’ Booking, Diego Carlos, Elbow ball
🟨 | 90+4’ Booking, Jhon Durán
🗒️ | 90’+4 Harry Kane plays like he does for England and over promises but there is still time
🗒️ | 90’+5 Stunning stunning stunning save from Martínez to save a certain goal, the best ‘keeper in the World period.

What they Said
"It's been a long time since Champions League nights at Villa Park — everyone is excited and looking forward to it. Playing Champions League football for Villa is the best it can get.
"We've got a manager that we trust — he's been there and experienced it all. He always has us focused on the next game and the task at hand.
"These are the nights we all dreamt of especially since I came here.
"Playing Champions League football for Villa is the best it can get really, I think we’ve all got to go out there and enjoy it. Not make the most of it because that sounds like we’re underestimating ourselves, but just enjoy it because it’s so long since the club has been involved in a competition like this, and for me personally, I haven’t experienced Champions League football before so I want to enjoy it because this is what I dreamt of as a kid.
“Players have played in the Champions League from the squad in different clubs so we do have that experience there.
"We’re in the best hands possible, our manager has experienced and won a lot of trophies and managed a lot of Champions League games. We have all faith in him and in the squad and confidence that when we play our best football we can put anyone to the test and perform.
"The fans will be excited and we as players will be but it’s more excitement and looking forward to it than pressure.
"When the manager first came in after we had just lost to Newcastle and were towards the bottom of the league, never did I think we would finish that season seventh and then go on to finish fourth. I don't think anyone would have said that.
"He has completely turned us around as players and the club. Full credit to him and us as players, obviously. But I would never have dreamt of it, to be honest.
"You have probably seen from his interviews, he is very demanding and focused. He knows what he wants. He puts in a lot of hard work. You obviously hear about professionals putting in work off the field and doing extras. It is the same for him.
"He’s in early, leaves late and is so focused and demanding. It is the small details. He respects everyone as a team, no matter their league position. I think that is probably his biggest strength, just respecting everyone and knowing they are capable of causing problems when we play.
"Since he set foot in the door it has been so positive. We have won more than we have lost and we are only getting better and improving. It is such a lovely place to be, this club, especially as a player but also for the fans and for people outside this club to see the stature of it, improving and getting better, every day and each week."
Ollie Watkins pre-match.
"In football there are mistakes, we have to accept it.
”Starting with me. Every match I am trying to be humble to identify my mistakes. Then, it is my responsibility to correct those mistakes after the matches. Try to correct it quickly and don’t repeat it. With the players it is the same.
"I am trying to identify overall the mistakes we are getting in each match and deeply when some mistakes are coming from individual players. But I never punish mistakes that players make for the next matches. I am trying to correct it through video and working with the players on the pitch.
"We worked yesterday morning and of course I want to try to correct by practising and hopefully tomorrow on the field.
"We are not defending like last year. It’s not for the defenders, the goalkeeper, it’s for everyone. The first defenders are the strikers and the first attacking player is the goalkeeper.
"We have to work to improve because we cannot concede the goals we are conceding each match we are playing. I am positive and I believe in our work but if we want to keep at the top level, we are scoring goals, but we are conceding more goals than normal."
Unai Emery takes on the haters who are unbelievably still hating on players that aren’t perfect 100% all of the time.
Seriously ‘support’ like theirs just isn’t needed and Emery shouldn’t have to waste his time on their nonsense.
"We are motivated and excited to play tomorrow in front of our supporters at Villa Park."
"We analyse the tactical areas collectively and then you have to stop the players. He knows us and we know him but his capacity and potential will be on the pitch.
"They have two strong centre-backs, good midfielders, good wingers and we have to stop them collectively and individually, there will be a lot of duels. We have to be alert and focused."
Unai Emery pre-match.
"You all know that it is over 40 years since their last Champions League home match.
"Last year was extraordinary for Aston Villa. They deserve to be here.
"They are well organised and at home they have fantastic support. But Bayern Munich is used to these nights. We want to have fun as well.
"I think everything that Aston Villa does is very clear. They are well organised, you can see that easily. You can see what they want to achieve in every stage of the game. They are very compact.
"It is similar to Leverkusen. Between the lines there is little space and they want to be dangerous on the counter attack. Aston Villa do that very well and that’s why they had so much success last season.
"It feels like two weeks ago since we played Bayer because we have prepared so thoroughly to face Aston Villa."
Vincent Kompany pre-match.
