What they Said
"I’m very happy because after three matches we have six points. We lost against Arsenal but competed the way we wanted. To get three points here today is fantastic.
"We competed very well in the first match against West Ham, in the second game against Arsenal and again here today.
"We have some days off now. We want a rest. We need to prepare for the next weeks in the Premier League and the Champions League.
"We have a lot of players going with the national teams now. It’s good, because it tells us the players are progressing. It’s fantastic.
"Very happy. We competed like we did in the first two matches. It is a difficult moment for every team while playing with the transfer window still open. Some players might be confused as we are changing players in the Premier League and across the world. We played each match this month being competitive and focusing on them.
"The Premier League is our first objective because through it we can play in Europe. The points today and the win at West Ham were fantastic. We achieved the points. Even against Arsenal we played very well. We tried to stay consistent in the same style and show the same commitment.
"Today I am very happy, we spoke about our supporters before. We feel good playing away because they are supporting us and helping us. We can feel them that they are here and today was very important to play like we did, to compete and use different players as well. Lamare Bogarde played his first match, Duran scored a goal and Ross Barkley had a good impact. We closed August with three matches with six points and we have to be happy but keep going.
"He [Lamare Bogarde] played comfortable. We played him in pre-season and when we use young players, it is because they have the potential. When we need them they must be ready, knowing our style, idea and demands. Bogarde played good matches in pre-season, trained every day and after the injuries to Cash and Carlos, we prepared for different options to choose the players playing there. Bogarde has qualities to play there and to do well. He played well.
"Always we speak about his [Jhon Durán’s] potential and the most important is that he focuses and he has consistency with us. When he arrived in pre-season, he was focusing to stay with us. He has trained well and he has started playing against West Ham, last week and today. He is having chances and scoring.
"He is focused. I didn’t need to speak a lot with him about his future because I watched him focusing here in training. He is playing as well doing what we were planning. He is scoring goals which is fantastic. The squad we have now, I am happy. Even with some injuries like Jaden, who wasn’t available until the last moment, Cash, Diego Carlos, Kamara, Mings, we have still have young players with potential as well. We have to give them chances to understand our style so they can play helping us like Lamare today.
"Ollie didn’t score but I’m happy with him. This is the way. He’s playing very well. He’s doing his work but he’s getting his chances. He’s going to score.
"Even when Watkins is not scoring, he is doing good work. He had two very good chances last week and today he had two very good chances. The goalkeeper saved them last week and now. We have to try and get the best performances individually and collectively.
"It [Leon Bailey’s injury] is hamstring. I don’t know exactly how bad his injury is. He came off the pitch with an injury.
"He [Jaden Philogene-Bidace] had a kick on Wednesday and he didn’t train, but we were thinking progressively that he could be available for today. In the end he told us he couldn’t play with the same pain.
"His [Amadou Onana’s] adaptation is being very good and he is understanding quickly everything. We are working with him a lot. He is hungry to grow up because he is young and he has lots of potential. Progressively he is adapting to our structure. Today I am also very happy with Ross Barkley. He was fantastic in the minutes he played.
"One potential he has is from set-pieces. He scored against West Ham and then again today. His mentality is a good mentality. We are being very demanding with the mentality we want to build here. I am happy as the set-pieces are very important. We focus a lot on them with Austin and the players are aware of the importance of them.
"Sometimes it depends how many injuries you have. Last year we struggled with three ACL injuries with Mings, Buendia and Kamara. We struggled as well with Moreno and Ramsey because they had injuries which for both of them a long time. We are ready in case we have injuries to choose in the squad different players being versatile.
"For example, John McGinn is already ready to play in different positions. His versatility for us is very, very important. He plays very well and today on the right side he is fantastic. Hopefully when we come back again Jaden could be available again to play, Leon maybe not. We need to have players who perform good collectively in the demands we have.
"We were very demanding how we were closing the squad with the players we will need more or less in our plan and letting some players leave on loan and playing more minutes so they can get experiences, then coming back next year. We added young players to the squad like Lamare, Sil and there are other players in the under-21s who we can work with.
Unai Emery.
