"But Jim Smith's side, without a win since November 30, proved worthy winners against a Villa side who have seldom been so poor at the back."
Villa fall to Derby
DERBY put horrendous injury problems and their poor Premiership form behind to dump Villa out of the FA Cup at the Baseball Ground
The Rams, already without six first team players through injury, lost Jacob Laursen in the pre-match warm-up and then fellow defender Gary Rowett after just 19 minutes with a hamstring injury.
But Jim Smith's side, without a win since November 30, proved worthy winners against a Villa side who have seldom been so poor at the back.
Victory came via two goals in four minutes before the interval.
In the 36th minute Paul Simpson floated a centre into the box which was seized on by Van Der Laan who had time to chest the ball down before firing past Bosnich.
Villa cracked again after a wonderful piece of skill on the left flank by Asanovic which ended with a delightful pass to Sturridge.
He kept his nerve and cut in from the left before firing past an exposed Bosnich.
