Villa open the campaign with a shock defeat at Hillsborough to a Wednesday side who had finished 11 places below them the previous season.
Midfielder Scott Murray, 22, makes his final appearance in a Villa shirt before moving on to Bristol City for a fee of £203,000 in December 1997 to make it W0 D1 L3 across his short Villa career.
Tommy Johnson scores his first goal in 10 Premier League games to make it 47 appearances in a Villa shirt (36 Starts), W20 D10 L17, 13 Goals, 2 Assists and 7 Bookings at a goal involvement rate of one for every 3.13 games he has played so far in his Villa career.
Michael Oakes makes his 2nd appearance in a Villa shirt nearly 2 years after his debut under Ron Atkinson to make it W1 D0 L1, 2 Goals Conceded at a rate of 1.00 goals per game and 1 Clean Sheet (50%) so far in his Villa career.
Mark Draper makes his 50th appearance in a Villa shirt to make it W26 D12 L12, 5 Goals, 7 Assists and 1 Booking so far in his Villa career.
Former Villa centre forward Guy Whittingham scores for Wednesday on 84’.
What they Said
“I wasn’t too disheartened.
“But I do think that our game was a bit long.
“By that I mean in terms of passing, particularly after they went two up.
“We resorted to too many balls over the top and that was playing into Des Walker’s hands.
“He [Michael Oakes] did well, he had no chance with either of the goals.”
Brian Little.
Guy Whittingharn, playing against his old club, doubled Wednesday's lead by heading home an 84th minute corner from Regi Blinker and even though Tommy Johnson replied with a close-range header from an Alan Wright cross, Wednesday held on.
