VILLA skipper Andy Townsend gave his team victory yesterday with 34th minute goal, but it was in controversial fashion. Alan Wright had beaten Southampton's Matthew Oakley to the ball on halfway and got up to run into acres of space down the left where Milosevic found him. Wright only had Beasant to beat, but spotted Townsend bursting into the box and squared to the skipper to steer into the empty net with no off side given.
Southampton wondered why the flag had not been raised, but the officials were adamant that Townsend had remained onside.
