MATCHDAY QUOTES

"It was disappointing to say the least.

"We gave our players the benefit of the doubt at halftime, because we were facing such a strong wind, but we didn't put Wimbledon under the same amount of pressure when it was in our favour."

Villa assistant manager John Ward.

*Sunday World (Dublin)*
Sunday, 12 February 1989

WIMBLEDON repeated their recent FA Cup success over Aston Villa on a day when good behaviour was as important as goals and points.

The much criticised Dons were winners on every count. John Fashanu, lying on the floor, scooped the ball over the line in the 44th minute and a crossbar, a goalline clearance and half a dozen fine saves from Nigel Spink prevented a runaway home victory.

Allan Evans saved Villa from falling behind after 10 minutes when he cleared off his line from Fairweather with goalkeeper Spink beaten.

Evans, replacing the suspended Keown, was frequently in action as the Dons pushed forward and headline-maker Vinny Jones' main early contribution was a series of long throws into the crowded Villa box.

A rare Villa attack saw Segers fail to gather a cross from Ormondroyd, but Platt arrived just too late to capitalise.

On the half-hour Wise curled a free kick against the Villa crossbar after he himself had been fouled, but Spink was equal to the challenge when Fairweather put in a powerful header minutes later.

After 39 minutes Callaghan found Mclnally unmarked only eight yards out but the 21-goal striker headed over the top.

Five minutes later Villa were punished for that miss.

Wise crossed from the left, Fashanu tumbled to the ground as he tried to meet the ball but somehow managed to stab it home when Fairweather returned the loose ball.

Gage and Cowans were off target as Villa took advantage of the stiff breeze behind them on the resumption.

Wimbledon gradually eased their way back into control, however, and the games first real flare-up came in the 53rd minute when a late tackle on Wise brought a booking.
