MATCHDAY QUOTES

"For the first time this season, we came out with a second half which was based on confidence.

“I told Platt to stay forward instead of coming through from deep positions and we kept the tempo going much better.

"We are not a top three side.

”I just want a good season and I don't want to put any more pressure than that on the players."

Graham Taylor.

Brilliantly taken goals by Tony Daley and David Platt enabled Aston Villa to overpower a skilful but lightweight Everton side.

Daley hit a spectacular volley from Chris Price's cross after 33 minutes, and David Platt curved a 64th minute shot round goalkeeper Neville Southall.

Everton knocked the ball with some style in the first half but rarely found a way to break down the home side's sweeper system.

Kevin Gage won an important midfield battle as Villa stormed to their first home League win of the season.

Gage was booked for a foul in the second half, but Peter Reid and Kevin Ratcliffe were also shown the yellow card for taking retribution.

Villa’s direct methods brought a number of chances and Southall had to rescue Everton with a fine reflex save from Platt.
