Villa Park

A horrific game in which Villa outclassed Wimbledon in play and personality but lose. Wimbledon have a player sent off for a deliberate elbow but only two others booked despite 22 fouls and a penalty. Villa had ten attempts, Wimbledon had only one that forced the keeper to react - the goal - whilst Villa had five, including the penalty which brought repeated excellent saves from Segers.

ON THIS DAY

Graham Taylor's Villa's troubled January continues as they are dumped out of both Cups and record one League win. Meanwhile, a seeming casualty of Villa's poor form is midfielder Andy Gray who makes his final appearance for Villa aged just 24 before moving on to Queens Park Rangers in February 1989 for a fee of £450,000. Villa had bought Gray from Crystal Palace in November 1987 for £150,000 and played in 1987-88 and 1988-89 making 42 appearances and scoring 6 goals.

"Hans Sergers, their Dutch goalkeeper, who made a string of fine saves highlighted by denying Villa skipper Alan Evans from the penalty spot as the home side chased the equaliser."

*Sunday World (Dublin)*
Sunday, 29 January 1989

WIMBLEDON the F.A. Cup holders march on.

Vinny Jones got the only goal of the game but the hero was Hans Sergers, their Dutch goalkeeper, who made a string of fine saves highlighted by denying Villa skipper Alan Evans from the penalty spot as the home side chased the equaliser.

Villa struggled to cope with the early bombardment from corners, but looked dangerous themselves when using Daley's pace on the wings. Platt finished a quick break by Daley with an acrobatic shot over the bar.

The home side threatened again when Platt linked up with Mclnally before the Scotsman trimmed the crossbar with a shot on the turn.

Jones responded with a 30- yard effort for Wimbledon but the Londoners needed a good save by Segers to deny Platt after 23 minutes.

Platt disappointed Villa with a tame header from an unmarked position and then Wimbledon went close with a shot from Wise which was blocked by Gage.

A fast and furious game also brought injuries. Fashanu was booked after laying out Evans and Carlton Fairweather carried a cloth to mop a bloody nose. With tempers rising. referee Midgeley showed the yellow card to Wimbledon's Gibson and Villa's Keown.

Segers continued to be the busier goalkeeper early in the second half, but Wimbledon went ahead through Jones on the hour.

When Spink punched out a free kick by Wise, the ball dropped to Jones 12 yards out and his low shot somehow found a way under the goalkeeper and through a crowded goalmouth.

Villa chased an equaliser and were handed a golden opportunity when Sanchez chopped down Gage

Surprisingly. Evans took the kick and Segers dived to his right to palm the ball away. The Wimbledon defence. despite having Young i sent oft. held out to keep their Cup double hopes alive.
