On This Day
Johnny Dixon scores a brace as Villa open the season with a draw but it is a poor performance from referee Heselton that grabs the headlines.
Villa, two goals to the good after 16' concede on 35' but lead at the interval. In the first minute of the second half however Peter McParland is prostrate on the floor following a City tackle and his attempt to pass to a team mate is intercepted. Play continues and referee Heselton awards a penalty to City amidst strong protests as Stan Lynn was deemed to have fouled Cunliffe. In reality it was actually obstruction, punishable with a free kick but Heselton would not listen to reason.
Eric Houghton's Villa open the season with a draw at Maine Road.
