On This Day
Villa's season of two halves ends with Alex Massie's side in joint 9th place, categorised as 10th.
On New Years Day 1949 Villa had been 22nd, bottom of the table and adrift from safety.
One defeat in the following 17 League games and unbeaten in their last 12, Villa executed a meteoric rise from the foot of the table to the top 10 as Trevor Ford, Dicky Dorsett and latterly Johnny Dixon starred whilst Con Martin and Frank Moss grew in such stature that the defence - unable to keep a clean sheet, turned that almost into an art form in their end of season run.
Relegation had seemed not just expected but inevitable at the turn of the year, now though 1949-50 was being anticipated with excitement not trepidation.
Full back George Cummings made the last of his 232 appearances for Villa aged 35 before retiring from football.
