Second string Villa are dumped out of the EFL Cup at home by fellow Championship side Boro as Steve Bruce continues to cling on to this job with little sign of the spark needed to kick start the season.

The forward netted from the penalty spot after being brought down by Tommy Elphick, who was shown a second yellow card.

Bamford, who hit the crossbar with a header in the first half, nodded in his second with 23 minutes remaining.

Villa defender Elphick earlier had an effort of his own ruled out.
