The forward netted from the penalty spot after being brought down by Tommy Elphick, who was shown a second yellow card.

Bamford, who hit the crossbar with a header in the first half, nodded in his second with 23 minutes remaining.

Villa defender Elphick earlier had an effort of his own ruled out.

Jake Doyle-Hayes shot, comfortably saved by Boro goalkeeper Dimi Konstantopoulos, was one of Villa’s best efforts.

It was the third time in the past four games that Steve Bruce’s side have failed to score.
