Robert Snodgrass
Player #920 for Aston Villa, Robert Snodgrass, played as a winger for the club during the 2017-18 season.
Snodgrass was born in Gallowgate, Glasgow on 7 September 1987.
Villa had signed Snodgrass on loan from West Ham United on 25 August 2017 until the end of the 2017-18 Football League Championship season.
Snodgrass made his Villa debut on Saturday, 9 September 2017 aged 30 as a 60’ substitute for Keinan Davis in the 0-0 home draw with Brentford.
Snodgrass would go on to prove one of the most influential players of the season - both on and off pitch - making 43 appearances, scoring 7 and providing 14 assists.
His performances, enthusiasm and tenacity had a catalytic effect on Villa and he dovetailed perfectly with the new intake of players that Villa had assembled following their relegation from the Premier League.
Snodgrass typified the team spirit and unity that Villa had developed under Steve Bruce’s stewardship and which had been sorely lacking during the last half decade of Premier League football.
Snodgrass scored his first goal and created his first assist for the club in the 4-0 victory over Burton Albion on Tuesday, 26 September 2017 and he repeated the feat in the 2-0 win over Preston North End on Wednesday, 1 November 2017.
Snodgrass would hit a purple patch of creativity - with 3 assists for 4 goals across 2 games in late November as Steve Bruce’s tenure as Villa boss finally came alive.
Across the festive period of 2017 Snodgrass created one and scored three including a brace in the 5-0 demolition of Bristol City on New Years Day 2018.
Snodgrass would continue to create opportunities for his team-mates at great regularity and developed a habit for last minute winners beating both Sheffield clubs away from home in the dying seconds with his last minute winner against Sheffield Wednesday being his final goal for the club.
Snodgrass played his final game for Villa in the Championship play off final defeat to Fulham on Saturday, 26 May 2018. An inspirational player who Villa would undoubtedly have wished to re-sign for the 2018-19 Championship campaign but whose acquisition was prevented by the severe financial straits Villa found themselves in immediately following the play off defeat.
A fleeting player but one who won’t be forgotten.
