Scott Hogan

Player #903 for Aston Villa, Scott Andrew Hogan, played as a forward for the club from 2016-17 to 2018-19.

Hogan was born in Salford on 13 April 1992.

Villa had signed Hogan on 31 January 2017 from Brentford for a fee of £9,450,000.

Hogan made his competitive debut for Villa at the age of 24 in the 2-1 away defeat to Nottingham Forest on Saturday, 4 February 2017 and and he went on to make 13 appearances in his debut season, scoring once in the 2-0 away victory over Wigan Athletic on Saturday, 18 March 2017.

Hogan started the 2017-18 campaign in the first team but scored failed to score a league goal and by the end of August 2017 Bruce had relegated Hogan to the bench.

Over the following 12 games league games Hogan made a single start and was introduced from the bench on 10 occasions. Hogan again failed to score however he did hit 3 goals in 3 appearances in the EFL Cup across the period scoring against Wigan Athletic and Colchester United.

Bruce recalled Hogan to the team for the 2017 Christmas fixtures and Hogan went on his best run of form coinciding with consistent selection in the first team.

Hogan scored 5 in 5 games from Monday, 1 January 2018 to Saturday, 3 February 2018 but despite making a further 5 starts, Hogan would not score again and was once again dropped to the substitutes bench by Bruce as loanee Lewis Grabban was preferred.

Across the 14 games to the end of the season, Hogan would make just 3 starts and 7 substitute appearances, scoring once and he was limited to a cameo appearance in Villa’s unsuccessful Play Off final match with Fulham on Saturday, 26 May 2018.

Hogan didn’t play again under Bruce due to injury and it wasn’t until Dean Smith’s arrival as Villa boss in October 2018 that Hogan was fit enough to be given a first team opportunity.

Smith named Hogan in the Villa squad for 17 consecutive league matches between Tuesday, 2 October 2018 and Saturday, 12 January 2019 and he made an appearance from the bench in 6 of those games, failing to score.

Smith had seen enough and sent Hogan out on loan to Premier League promotion chasing rivals Sheffield United in what was a surprising move, however perhaps demonstrated Smith’s low expectations of the player. Indeed Hogan couldn’t rediscover form at Bramall Lane and made just 8 appearances, scoring twice.

With Villa winning promotion back to the Premier League Hogan was deemed surplus to requirements by Dean Smith and was sent out on loan for the 2019-20 season to Championship side Stoke City. Stoke ended Hogan’s loan spell early after the player hit 3 goals in 15 appearances in their fight against relegation.

With Hogan unexpectedly back at Villa, Smith quickly shipped Hogan out to neighbours Birmingham City for the remainder of the season to fight another battle against relegation to League One. Hogan scored 7 goals in 17 appearances for Birmingham as they successfully avoided dropping into the third tier however all of Hogan’s goals had come in his early games for Birmingham and was once again suffering a goal drought by the end of the campaign.

Despite this, Hogan returned to Birmingham City on a permanent deal in September 2020 for a fee of £2.49m.

In total Hogan made 61 appearances, scoring 10 goals, across his 4 seasons with Villa.
