On This Day
Paul Lambert's New Years' Resolution to make himself even more unpopular gets off to a great start as he throws away a Cup run to leave Villa with eleven defeats in twenty three games including losses to two League One sides one of whom was one only justpromoted from the fourth tier of English football.
Paul Lambertโs Villa lose for the seventh time in ten home games to crash out of the FA Cup to League One Sheffield United.
Hardly helping Lambertโs cause was his Houllier-esque idiotic comments about the value of the FA Cup that he had to speedily backtrack.
Nicklas Helenius scores his first goal on his 6th and final appearance in a Villa shirt (0 Starts). Having only joined in July 2013 for ยฃ1,350,000 from Aalborg, like so many of Paul Lambert's signings, Helenius was completely out of this depth in the Premier League and would be released on a free to Aalborg in July 2015 with a record of W2 D0 L4, 0 Goals, 0 Assists
Ashley Westwood makes his 50th appearance in a Villa shirt (48 Starts) to make it W15 D13 L22, 1 Goal, 7 Assists and 8 Bookings so far in his Villa career.
What they Said
โIf they [Premier League managers] were being honest, they probably would do [without the FA Cup]โ
Paul Lambert, Friday, 3 January 2014.
โI never decried the FA Cup in any shape or form.
โI never demeaned the competition. I respect its history. I put out the strongest team I could do to try to win the game.
โThe FA Cup is a brilliant competition and everybody wants to do well in it.
โIf you look at my own career, I won things in cup competitions. I won a few leagues here and there but actually won competitions so I am not degrading it.
โI donโt think we did enough to go through and that is me being honest.
โGood luck to Sheffield United in the next round.
โWe had a lot of the ball and huffed and puffed. It was one of those kind of games.
โI know it (an upset) can happen and it is not a great feeling when things like that happen to you.โ
Paul Lambert, Saturday, 4 January 2014.
League One Sheffield United send Aston Villa crashing out
Sheffield Utd picked up a Premier League scalp and a place in the fourth round of the FA Cup with a 2-1 win at Aston Villa.
Strikes from Jamie Murphy and Ryan Flynn were enough to see Nigel Cloughโs League One giant-killers spring a surprise at Villa Park, with Nicklas Helenius offering a solitary reply for the hosts.
Paul Lambert admitted prior to the game that cup competitions sit some way down his list of priorities, and the Scot need not concern himself with them for the remainder of the season after being humbled on home soil.
Murphyโs opener arrived with 20 minutes on the clock, with a deflected effort making its way past Villaโs rookie goalkeeper Jed Steer.
Helenius stepped off the bench to restore parity on 75 minutes, but United were not to be denied and Flynn rifled into the roof of the net nine minutes from time to secure a memorable success.
*Shock*
Villaโs day went badly from the start - Nathan Baker injuring himself in the warm-up and having to be replaced by Aleksandar Tonev, and the visitors more than held their own until Murphy gave them a shock lead.
The Blades striker made the most of some hesitant Villa defending to cut in from the left flank and drill a hard, low shot which appeared to take a deflection off Andreas Weimann on its way past Steer.
The goal briefly sparked the home side into life as Matthew Lowton clattered a shot against team-mate Weimann from an Antonio Luna cross, then Christian Benteke was inches from connecting with a cross-field ball from Fabian Delph.
But as the first half neared its conclusion it was the visitors who looked likely to grab a second goal, Tony McMahon causing problems in the Villa box with his low cross from the right, and a Murphy ball from the left blocked by Villa captain Ciaran Clark as Chris Porter lurked in front of goal.
Benteke missed two glorious chances to equalise for Villa in the final minute of the first half, twice heading horribly wide after misjudging two crosses from Marc Albrighton.
Continuing to make a mockery of their lowly league position, the Blades started the second half in fine fashion with Flynn bringing two consecutive saves out of Villa keeper Steer.
In response, Villa were struggling to muster any sort of attacking threat and their best chance to equalise in the 55th minute had an element of fortune about it as Albrightonโs cross from the right almost caught out George Long.
*Dominate*
Lambert threw on an additional striker in Helenius but the Blades continued to dominate and could have increased their lead on the hour when Steer spilled a low drive from Flynn and Villa were somewhat fortunate to be in a position to boot the ball away from danger.
Villa struggled to muster any attacking threat whatsoever until the 70th minute when Albrighton set up Benteke who toe-poked his shot straight at Long, then moments later Benteke fed Ashley Westwood whose shot from the left side of the box was scooped high and wide of target.
But the home side finally grabbed a scarcely deserved equaliser in the 75th minute when Weimannโs shot in the box took a big deflection and found substitute Helenius who fired home from the left side of the box.
If Villa thought they had turned the game around the visitors had other ideas. First Porter burst into the box straight from the re-start and scooped a glorious chance just over the bar, then Flynn flashed a shot across the face of goal.
But Flynn made amends in the 81st minute with a stunning strike to put the Blades back in front, cutting across the edge of the Villa box before unleashing a mighty left-foot shot past Steer in front of the massed ranks of visiting fans.
Benteke bicycle-kicked Villaโs final effort over the bar deep into injury-time and the final whistle sparked wild celebrations among the visiting contingent - and boos for Lambertโs men.
