Antonio Luna
Player #861 for Aston Villa, Antonio Manuel Luna Rodríguez known as Antonio Luna played as a left back for the club in Villa’s 2013-14 Premier League season making 18 appearances and scoring once.
Antonio was born in Son Servera, Spain on 17 March 1991.
Paul Lambert had signed Antonio from Sevilla FC for £1,800,000 in July 2013 and as with pretty much every signing that the bewildering Lambert made, Luna was hopelessly out of his depth at Villa but that didn’t stop him being both appreciated and celebrated as an unlikely cult hero in an otherwise trying time.
Antonio made a goalscoring debut for Villa on Saturday, 17 August 2013 aged 22 as Villa beat Arsenal 3-1 in their own back yard. That however was to prove the high point of “Tony Moon’s” time with Villa.
Luna would be named in all of Villa’s first ten Premier League games of the season before intermittent injuries interrupted his season. Villa however were struggling once again under Lambert and despite the opening day win Villa had lost 5 of their league games but the time Luna was injured.
On his return to the side Villa were on an unbeaten run of 5 games however form would turn and Luna’s final six starts for the club would result in four defeats before Luna made his first substitute appearance, and last appearance for Villa, coming on for Ryan Bertrand in the 81’ of the 2-2 draw at Liverpool.
In an intense 25 game spell, Luna had made 18 appearances, scored on debut and then disappeared completely from view in a typically bewildering career under Lambert.
Luna remained with Villa throughout the 2013-14 season but was not again considered for team selection and for 2014-15 he would be sent out on loan by Lambert to Hellas Verona F.C. and then - in one of his final actions as Villa boss - to Spezia Calcio before being released on a free transfer aged 24, joining SD Eibar in July 2015.
Luna had played under Paul Lambert.
