ON THIS DAY

Paul Lambert’s Villa fail to score for the fourteenth time in thirty four games and fail to win at home for the thirteenth time in eighteen matches.

As a result Villa sit 15th but are five points clear of the drop zone with four to play.

Meanwhile, Lambert’s assistants were suspended pending an investigation into allegations of bullying and aggressive off-and on-field behaviour.

Lambert was praised by the absent Chairman Randy Lerner for his “total loyalty” in the aftermath of the eventual suspension of Ian Culverhouse and Gary Karsa.

A series of players were revealed to have been upset by the actions of the assistants during the season and despite raising the issues with Lambert they went unresolved.

However, those same players were found to have subsequently missed matches for alleged injury and illness, perhaps explaining the often bizarre trends of player unavailability through the season to date.

In another self-defeating move of breathtaking stupidity, it was also revealed that those players had been rendered unavailable in crucial fixtures that Villa had gone on to lose including the damaging 2-1 defeat to Fulham.

In a move packed with supreme irony, Lambert promoted Shay Given to assistant duties.

At the start of the campaign, Lambert had placed Given in the infamous 'bomb squad' of first team players not to be considered for duty.

*Aston Villa have suspended assistant manager Ian Culverhouse and head of football operations Gary Karsa pending an internal investigation.*

Gordon Cowans and Shay Given have been temporarily promoted to assist manager Paul Lambert, the club said.
Villa have not explained why Culverhouse and Karsa were disciplined.

The duo joined the club after Lambert was appointed in June 2012, having worked with the Scot at Colchester, Wycombe and Norwich.

Former Villa midfielder Cowans, 55, steps up from his role as development coach, while Given, 37, is the team’s reserve goalkeeper and only returned from a loan spell with Middlesbrough at the end of February.

“I’m delighted to have Gordon and Shay to assist me in preparing the team for Saturday, which is what the whole group is focused on,” said Lambert.

Given added: “As players, it’s important that each and every one of us take responsibility right now and I’m delighted to play my part in helping the manager and the team go and try to win on Saturday.”

Defeats in their last four matches have seen Villa slip to 14th in the Premier League table, four points above the relegation zone, going into Saturday’s home game against Southampton.

“Paul Lambert’s judgment has to be questioned now two close colleagues he has worked with at four clubs have been suspended. But I understand he wanted this.

“It may look as though Lambert is in deeper trouble after this, but I understand he has been fully supported by owner Randy Lerner and chief executive Paul Faulkner.

“A run of 15 points from the last 19 games would be enough ammunition for many owners to sack their manager, but I hear Lerner remains fully behind Lambert.”

*Aston Villa manager Paul Lambert says he cannot discuss the reasons why Ian Culverhouse and Gary Karsa have been suspended by the club.*

The coaching duo were suspended on Tuesday, pending an internal investigation, and replaced by Gordon Cowans and Shay Given.

“You will need to appreciate that because of a legal investigation I cannot comment on it,” said Lambert.
Villa, who have lost their last four games, host Southampton on Saturday.

Like Lambert, Villa have made no public comment on the reasons for suspending assistant manager Culverhouse and head of football operations Karsa.

The Villa boss did say that his relationship with club owner Randy Lerner remained “excellent”.

But he added: “Like me, Randy knows we need to be doing better. We owe it to our fans, who’ve been fantastic to us this season.”

Villa go into Saturday’s game against Southampton lying 14th in the Premier League, four points above the relegation zone.

Of their final five games, two are at Villa Park, before Lambert’s side finish their season with away fixtures at Manchester City and Tottenham.

Former Villa midfielder and European Cup winner Cowans, 55, has stepped up from his role as development coach to assist Lambert.

Goalkeeper Given, 37, has not played for the club in nearly 15 months and recently returned from a loan spell with Middlesbrough.
---
To play the way we did in the second half, against a good Southampton side, I cannot fault the effort.

“The lads deserve enormous credit and with their energy and desire I couldn’t be prouder. Our goal difference is pretty good, so we’ll probably need one more win [to be safe from relegation].

“After the events of this week, that performance shows evidence of the players’ commitment.”

*Aston Villa ended a tumultuous week with a valuable point as they edged closer to Premier League survival after a goalless draw with Southampton.*

The club suspended assistant boss Ian Culverhouse and head of football operations Gary Karsa on Tuesday with the club struggling for form.

Southampton dominated proceedings with Steve Davis having their best chance but Brad Guzan kept out his effort.

Villa are now five points above the bottom three with four games left.

It has been a difficult week for the club off the pitch following the suspensions of Culverhouse and Karsa pending an internal investigation.

Villa’s boss Paul Lambert was assisted by Gordon Cowans and Shay Given for the visit of Southampton and the result, which ended a run of four consecutive defeats, will provide some relief for the beleaguered manager.

His players seemed to be feeling the pressure of their perilous position in the table and were off the pace in a disappointing first-half performance.

They failed to muster a single shot on or off target with Southampton enjoying 71% of possession during the opening 45 minutes.

Saints dominated the first half with Rickie Lambert heading straight at Guzan from Luke Shaw’s cross while later seeing a side-footed effort deflected wide.

Davis had Southampton’s best chance of the half but his strike on the turn from 12 yards after poor Villa defending was superbly kept out by Guzan on the stretch.

Villa’s fans had little to get excited about other than Ryan Bertrand’s cross, which was beaten away by Artur Boruc and then rebounded off Dejan Lovren for a corner.

A chance eventually fell Villa’s way and it came from a poor clearance by Boruc that eventually fell to Karim El Ahmadi - but after he showed neat footwork to create an opportunity, his tame shot from the edge of the area was comfortably held.

Southampton should have been in front but Adam Lallana skewed his shot wide from six yards after a fine surging run and cross by the impressive Shaw on the left wing.

At the other end, Marc Albrighton tested Boruc with a rasping drive from 20 yards with the Polish keeper having to gather at the second attempt.

Saints tried to claim a penalty late on after Bertrand blocked Nathaniel Clyne’s cross in the box but Lee Mason waved away their appeals as a poor game ended scoreless.
