Player #249 for Aston Villa, James Harrop, known as Jimmy Harrop and nicknamed Head Up, played as a centre back for the club.
Jimmy played for Villa between 1912-13 and 1920-21 making 171 appearances for the club.
Jimmy was born in Heeley, Sheffield on 9th September 1884 and he made his debut appearance for Villa at the age of 27 on the 2nd September 1912.
Villa had signed Jimmy from Liverpool in June 1912 for a fee of £600 alongside goalkeeper Sam Hardy who signed for the club for the same fee.
During his time with Villa, Jimmy helped the club win the 1912-13 and 1919-20 FA Cup, reach the 1913-14 FA Cup Semi Final and to top 2 league finishes in 1912-13 and 1913-14.
Jimmy was instrumental in both FA Cup wins being an ever present in the 1912-13 campaign including the final victory against Sunderland in front of a crowd of 121,919 at Crystal Palace, London in April 1913.
Jimmy played 3 games in the 1919-20 FA Cup but missed out on playing in the final against Huddersfield Town held at Stamford Bridge in front of a much reduced crowd of 50,018 which saw Villa take the cup in extra time after a 100’ minute winner from Billy Kirton. Debutant that season centre half Frank Barson took Jimmy’s place.
Jimmy played his final game for Villa on Saturday, 5 March 1921 before moving on to hometown club Sheffield United in May 1921.
Jimmy played his entire Villa career under the George Ramsay led Management Committee.
Jimmy passed away in Derbyshire in 1958 aged 74.
