On This Day
  • A totally uncommitted performance at Selhurst Park is punished with a hammering at the hands of third from bottom Charlton to leave Villa 21st in the table but now nine points off safety with four to play and relegation seemingly soon to be confirmed as a mathematical certainty.

  • Billy McNeill's Villa lose for the second successive game and now have just thirteen wins in their last sixty five League games losing thirty one. Villa remain second from bottom, ahead of only Manchester City, and are now remain none points off safety and seven points off the relegation play off place with four games left to play and a total of twelve points available.

What they Said

"Results don't lie.”

“There can be no excuses.

“The players must take all the blame for our present situation.

"Although individuals have played well at times, we just have not functioned as a team unit.

"We have not had it right all season.

“We were lucky to escape last season and we all thought it would never happen again. But it has.

"We started badly and we were responsible for Graham Turner getting the sack.

“Sadly our performances have not been much better since then.

"Obviously, the players are down and very low at the moment.

"It's the biggest disappointment of my career. I have never lost a relegation battle and it's hard to swallow.

"We need a miracle.

”We just have to win our last four games and take a maximum 12 points.

"Anything less will be fatal, the end for us and Second Division next season.

"When the end of the season comes I shall be one of the first through the manager's office door to tell him that I am ready to give my all for next season if I'm wanted even if it is in the Second Division."

Steve Hunt.

"I only want to keep those players who are ready to give their all for us.

"If their attitudes are not right they can go as far as I am concerned.

"The team have been in steady decline for five years. If we must go down then the fact has to be used in the proper manner.

"We have to be on a steady basis, producing young players and be a viable proposition."

"The players are desperately disappointed.

"The Charlton match was a cup final to us and our defence was shocking. The Second Division is very much on the cards.

"Scandalous defending cost us the game.

“We got what we deserved nothing."

Billy McNeill.

"Over the last matches of the season we must play with pride as professionals and in the club.

"I shall just have to keep my chin up and place my arm around Billy's shoulders and the team as we go into the last four games.

"I just don't know what to say about the Charlton performance. I am disappointed more about the manner than the result.

"I know we have injuries but we have spent £2.9 million on players since I came back and then this."

Herbert Douglas Ellis.

"I must confess how easy it was. I was surprised at their [Villa’s] lack of fight."

Chariton manager Lennie Lawrence
