“They [the Villa fans] showed the depth of feeling there is for the club amongst the supporters.

“I wish sometimes the players would match it.

“This was a disgraceful performance.

“But they know now that relegation is staring them right in the face and unless they do something about it quickly, they will not be able to escape.”

Billy McNeill uses a worrying ‘they’.



“We were prepared to fight for our First Division lives out there.

“I have to wonder whether the same applied to Villa.

“I hope - and I really mean it - they avoid going down.

“But I have to doubt whether they can do it.”
