MATCH SUMMARY
Villa end the season with a heavy defeat at Old Trafford falling 0-3 behind in ten second half minutes in a goalscoring burst started by one of the many trophy winners jettisoned by the club under Herbert Douglas Ellis’ incompetent and damaging chairmanship. Villa finish bottom of the first division, relegated ten points off safety.

ON THIS DAY
Villa finished this most wretched of seasons relegated having won just three times in thirty two games, losing eighteen
.
Chairman Herbert Doug Ellis’ predictably disastrous policy of gutting the League and European Cup winning team and replacing it with lesser talents; his sale of players who performed well even in this fallow period; and his poor selection of managers, saw Villa fall to inevitable and all too predictable relegation to the second tier just five seasons after being crowned Champions of Europe.
If anything summed this up any better it is hard to think than a record of fourteen wins in last sixty nine League games losing thirty three under Ellis’ men Graham Turner and Billy McNeill.
In brighter news, left back Bernie Gallacher made his Villa debut aged 20 after joining from Perthshire County Schools (Paisley Boys) in March 1985.
Whilst, midfielder Stuart Ritchie made his sole appearance for Villa as a substitute aged 18 after joining from Hampshire County Schools in May 1986. Ritchie left for Crewe Alexandra in June 1987.
However Villa would face life in the second tier without left back Tony Dorigo who made his final appearance for Villa aged just 21 before being sold to Chelsea for a fee of £475,000.
Dorigo had played for Villa between 1983-84 and 1986-87 making 133 appearances and scoring once.
Centre forward Andy Gray made his final Villa appearance aged 31 before being sold to West Bromwich Albion for a fee of £8,000.
Villa had bought Gray for his second spell with Villa two years earlier for a fee of £150,000.
Gray played for Villa in two spells between 1975-76 and 1986-87 making 251 appearances and scoring 84 goals.
Midfielder Phil Robinson made his final appearance for Villa aged 20 before moving on to Wolverhampton Wanderers for a fee of £5,000 in July 1987.
Robinson had made his debut for Villa in the 1986-87 season and made 3 appearances, scoring once.
Defender Dean Glover made his final appearance for Villa aged 23 before moving on to Middlesbrough for a fee of £50,000 in June 1987.
Glover had played for Villa between 1983-84 and 1986-87 making 38 appearances and scoring twice.

MATCHDAY QUOTES
“Ron Atkinson, Mr Flash of football, will be appointed manager of Aston Villa after a board meeting on Monday.
“Atkinson, charged with daunting task of getting the club back into the First Division, will move in the with his loyal side-kick Mick Brown to take over from the unsuccessful partnership of Billy McNeill and Ron Wylie, who were sacked yesterday by chairman Doug Ellis.
“Atkinson is keeping a low profile until Monday when, barring any last-minute hitches or a breakdown of negotiations, he will return to the club he played for as a boy.
“All he would say today was: "I have always had a great affection for the club and if they want me I would gladly accept."
“Ellis was equally cagy. He said: "I shall have to consult my directors before any new signing is made on the managerial front."
The Birmingham Evening Mail, Saturday, 9 May 1987
---
“Meanwhile, it seemed that Atkinson, previously a red-hot tip for the job, was holding out for a better salary offer and terms that are bound to include heavy compensation should he and the club part company.”
Ron Atkinson knows exactly what he would be getting in to.
The Birmingham Evening Mail, Monday, 11 May 1987

“Aston Villa chairman Doug Ellis and his three-man board have been snubbed by Second Division champions Derby County in an audacious approach for Arthur Cox. Ellis wanted to include Southam-born Cox on their short-list for the Villa Park managerial vacancy. Cox was once on Villa's coaching staff during Tommy Docherty's reign.”
The Birmingham Evening Mail, Tuesday, 12 May 1987
---
“Aston Villa chairman Doug Ellis is not rushing into making the most crucial decision of his near-20-year involvement with the club. Nam• ing the right manager is vital for the club's revival and maybe, even, survival. It seems that he is spreading his net after an initial plan to appoint former Albion and Manchester United boss Ron Atkinson. with Norwich asking speak with Ken Brown.”
The Birmingham Evening Mail, Wednesday, 13 May 1987
---
“Graham Taylor joined Aston Villa as manager today in a sensational move from Watford. Villa announced the capture after weekend negotiations. Up to Saturday it seemed that Dave Bassett, who walked out of Wimbledon, would be moving to Villa Park but further talks led to a shuffle which brought Taylor to Villa and means that Bassett will go to Watford.“
