Villaโs determined play was often interrupted by strange decisions, from Scunthorpe referee Tony Jenkins.
Deehan was twice pulled back by David Watson and Colin Bell, but the referee refused to award a foul in Villa's favour.
Despite these dubious rulings Villa kept up their task moving the ball about quite freely in midfield before setting up Deehan and Gary Shelton for penetrating runs into the heart of City's defence.
After Villaโs first equaliser, they immediately fell behind yet again after referee Jenkins ruled that Gibson had fouled Channon just outside the area.
It brought an angry response from Vila, who claimed that the referee had signalled the freekick was indirect and Mortimer was unfairly booked for dissent.
