Villa Park

Villa looked to be coasting to a comfortable win against second tier Palace when former ‘keeper John Burridge who left the club seven months ago saved Tommy Craig’s spot kick before the referee awarded a disputed hand ball penalty for Palace to equalise the score. The referee went on to clamp down on dissent but continually overlooked the brutal challenges on and off the ball that Palace were inflicting on the home players. Ron Saunders didn’t need any more ammunition for his post match outburst.

MATCHDAY QUOTES

“If that is what football is about them I don’t like football any more.

“I keep reading about what good football this side plays [Palace] and then that kind of thing happens.

“They tried to kick us off the park.

“I must be preaching the wrong thing here.

“Shelton was done four times before they finally got him.

“The way injuries are going for us at the moment we are going to have to close up shop and play our games off in the summer.

“It was not what was happening on the ball that bothered me - you expect that in football - it was that was going on off it.”

Ron Saunders.
