Villa Park

Villa are held at home to leave them with one League win at Villa Park this season as Ron Saunders’ already depleted squad suffers fresh injury trouble as Jimmy Rimmer needs treatment three times during the game before leaving the ground with a heavily strapped knee. John Gidman also suffered a hip injury in the same 44’ incident as Rimmer causing his late substitution but John Deehan’s first of the season puts Villa ahead before a penalty equaliser pegs them back for the draw.

MATCHDAY QUOTES

"I'll be here on Wednesday even if they have to carry me out on a stretcher."

Jimmy Rimmer.

"It's a tender spot to get a whack. It is pretty painful at the moment and although everybody seems to think it will be all right by Wednesday. I'm not so sure.”

John Gidman.

"I thought that everyone of the 22 players out there worked hard.

”We certainly did. But although we played some pretty good football we also played some not so good stuff.

"There was a lot of physical contact. Both sides were closing it down which, of course, is all part of the game.

“There were a lot of loose 50-50 balls and a surprising number of occasions when a player from each side went for it and both ended up needing treatment.

"But we never really controlled it in midfield, which is the area you must dominate if you hope to do anything positive."

Ron Saunders.
