Villa scored their first goals of the season but couldn’t prevent their fourth successive defeat and had still failed to win a game this season sitting bottom of the Premier League.
Midfielder Andy Townsend made his final appearance for Villa aged 34 before moving on to Middlesbrough for a fee of £500,000 later this month. Townsend played for Villa between 1993-94 and 1997-98 making 175 appearances and scoring 11 goals, a period during which he won a brace of League Cups with Villa.
Villa fielded their oldest starting XI of the season with an average age of 27.12 years.
