On This Day
Villa's new manager finally bothers to turn up as Villa win in the League Cup third round.
Gรฉrard Houllierโs first game in charge came against familiar Cup foes Blackburn and despite going a goal down, Villa launched a spirited comeback with Houllier making an immediate impact with his first tactical substitution for the club as Emile Heskey scores just a minute after coming on to hand Villa the lead.
Despite the win, concerns were already being aired, as Houllier had actually been appointed on 8 September but elected to not take up his new role immediately. The perception that Houllier wasnโt fully committed would prove hard to shake.
Houllier didn't help himself by damning his match winner with feint praise as almost in an act of sinility he contradicted himself to the point of cringeworthy embarrassment whilst undermining Ashley Young's previous 4 years in a Villa shirt .
Centre back Curtis Davies, 25, makes his 67th and final appearance in a Villa shirt (60 Starts) before moving on to Birmingham City in January 2011 for a fee of ยฃ3,600,000. Davies joined Villa in August 2007 from West Bromwich Albion, however, over the previous twelve months Davies had barely featured due to injury would leave with a record of W32 D19 L16, 3 Goals, 1 Assist and 4 Bookings from his 4 seasons with the club.
John Carew secures his 50th win in a Villa shirt on his 100th start and 125th appearance to make it W50 D41 L34, 48 Goals, 12 Assists and 10 Bookings at a goal involvement rate of one for every 1.67 starts he has made so far in his Villa career.
Nathan Delfouneso contributes his 1st assist in a Villa shirt on his 29th appearance (22 Starts) to make it W11 D8 L10, 6 Goals, 1 Assist and 2 Bookings so far in his Villa career.
Emile Heskey secures his 25th win in a Villa shirt on his 61st appearance (39 Starts) to make it W25 D19 L17, 9 Goals, 4 Assists and 3 Bookings so far in his Villa career.
What they Said
"Villa is a club which is liked in Europe. It has an identity.
โAston Villa is known as [being like] Paris SaintโGermain. This club is known to be a good club. I've not met anyone saying it's a bad club. What the club needs is more ambition, more biting teeth.
"When you are a good club everything is fine, the comfort is there. What we need to do is get out of this comfort zone a bit more and get the results. The passion is there [but] the ambition to win things could do well at this club. The image is that it's a nice club. We want to be a winning club. A nice, winning club."
Gรฉrard Houllierโs charmless offensive starts.
โI know what Emile can do. He showed a few things in training to indicate he was in good form.
โHe was decisive. With Emile, itโs a matter of confidence. Itโs the same with all strikers but probably more so with him. He knows I like him - I signed him for Liverpool.
โJohn Carew probably tired out the Blackburn defenders. Emile came on and was showing freshness, scored one goal and played a part in the other two.
Gรฉrard Houllier.
โIf [Ashley Young] wants to keep his position [with England] and be extremely effective, maybe he has to play [at Villa] as a winger".
Gรฉrard Houllier on Ashley Young 22 September 2010.
"As a left-winger? No. He can play on the wing. Whether he can be one of the best in the world in that position ... I think he can be one of the best in another position."
"I told him I thought he could be a leader, not only in terms of quality but in terms of effort. He can be a star but a star as a team player. And his input must not be only making goals and scoring goals. It's his work rate and his attitude that can improve the rest of the team. Ideally I would like him to step up a bit more but he's got everything it takes to reach the very top."
"He needs to have a regular top performance for a number of games.โ
Gรฉrard Houllier on Ashley Young 24 September 2010.
โAll strikers need confidence. They need to feel they have the backing of the manager, club and the fans. Emile probably needs that more than the others. I saw him play on 4 September in Jamie Carragher's testimonial.
"Gary McAllister [the Villa assistant manager] was also involved in that game and he said Emile has still got something about him. Trust me, I think he will do well for us."
Gรฉrard Houllier keeps his finger on the pulse. What has Lerner done?
*Gerard Houllier made a winning start as Aston Villa manager as his side fought back to beat Blackburn and reach the fourth round of the Carling Cup.*
Gael Givet put Rovers ahead with a fierce drive from the edge of the area.
After struggling to respond, the home side improved after the break and Emile Heskey levelled with a cross-shot within seconds of coming off the bench.
Ashley Young met Nathan Delfounesoโs cross to make it 2-1 and quickly added a third goal after Heskeyโs solo run.
Houllier will want to forget a first half that saw his side struggle to settle and Gabriel Agbonlahor limp off after half-an-hour.
Soon afterwards, Givet gave Rovers the lead with a stunning strike - smashing the ball into the corner of the net after Ciaran Clark had half-cleared Morten Gamst Pedersenโs throw.
Pedersen came close to doubling his sideโs lead after the interval, when his curling effort was pushed away by Brad Guzan.
Villa changed their formation at the break but the game turned on the introduction of Heskey on 58 minutes, with the man that Houllier signed for Liverpool a decade ago making an instant impact.
Young set Heskey free and he took two touches on the left-hand side of the area before burying a low drive in the opposite corner of the net.
By now Villa were well on top and Barry Bannan saw his shot saved by Mark Bunn before Carlos Cuellar headed wide from a Young corner.
Houllierโs side kept coming forward and edged ahead after 76 minutes when Delfouneso crossed for Young to head home.
And it was Young who capped a fine performance by sealing victory seconds later, when he met Heskeyโs cross from close range.
*Aston Villa boss Gerard Houllier:*
