Luke Young

Player #810 for Aston Villa, Luke Paul Young played as a right back for the club between 2008-09 and 2011-12 making 91 appearances and scoring twice.

Young was born in Harlow, Essex on 19 July 1979 and was signed by Martin O’Neill from Middlesbrough for £2,700,000 on 8 August 2008.

Young proved an inspired purchase by O’Neill in contrast to some of his fellow intake in recent seasons, in fact the biggest downside of Young’s arrival was that it hadn’t happened earlier in his career.

O’Neill handed Young his debut appearance on Sunday, 17 August 2008 aged 29 as Villa beat Manchester City 4-2 courtesy of a Gabby Agbonlahor hat-trick.

In total Young made 43 appearances in his debut season including 42 starts as he played alongside a truly talented backline of Carlos Cuéllar, Martin Laursen and Wilfred Bouma.

Young had an injury curtailed season in 2009-10 making 20 appearances in a new look defence of Richard Dunne, James Collins and Stephen Warnock and helped Villa to the League Cup final, an FA Cup Semi Final and a 6th placed finish in the Premier League.

Young suffered another injury hit season under Gérard Houllier missing double figures of games and making just 24 appearances as Villa toiled in the league.

The arrival of Alex McLeish and a fit again Young promised a more successful season for 2011-12 however a family tragedy caused Young to take a break from the game and need to move nearer to his London roots.

After four starts in August 2011 under McLeish at the start of the 2011-12 campaign Young was gone moving to Queens Park Rangers for a fee of £1,010,000 later that month.
