MATCH SUMMARY
Villa win consecutive games as Liverpool lose to allow Villa to close to within a point of the leaders who still have a game in hand with four to play. Villa's achievements however are once again pilloried by the spiteful coverage in the Birmingham Evening Mail as they are offered grudging support solely "for reasons of local patriotism."
KEY MAN
Gordon Cowans, gave Villa a crucial lead to defend to retain the title pressure.

MATCHDAY QUOTES
"We have won our last two 1-0 and four more 1-0’s would suit me.
“Our strength is our ability to defend.
"Basically we are a solid side, hard to break down. We take a goal here and a goal there.
“It would be silly to expect my team to swarm over the opposition.
“They are not a team built that way - they are not really able to sustain their attacks, even though in mid-season there was a spell when we did play with more confidence.
“The side has developed from the three central defenders. They have prevented up going a goal down or the other side getting the equaliser.
“Much as the purists might like something better, we live in a real world and I am satisfied.
“The results suit me and the Villa fans.”
Graham Taylor.

GORDON COWANS clawed Liverpool's title advantage back to only a point with his third goal of the season at Villa Park.
With only four games left, Graham Taylor's men remain undaunted in pursuit of the unlikely, still needing another Anfield slip like today's against Forest to realise their championship dream.
They held on like grim death to their precious lead for the last half-an-hour against a Chelsea side determined to salvage their 11-match unbeaten run.
In the end, the Villa hero was again their new £1.5m striker, Tony Cascarino who set Cowans up.
