"David Platt, guilty of a glaring first half miss, put the issue beyond doubt 13 minutes later when he scored his 18th goal of the season from the penalty spot after being brought down by Day."
*Aberdeen Press and Journal*
Thursday, 18 January 1990
Stuart Gray marked his return to action after a seven match absence through injury by setting Aston Villa on the way to the Northern Area final of the Zenith Cup.
Gray finally broke the resistance of the Second Division leaders in the 64th minute when he played a one-two with lan Olney to unlock Leeds' persistent offside trap before firing past former Villa keeper Mervyn Day.
David Platt, guilty of a glaring first half miss, put the issue beyond doubt 13 minutes later when he scored his 18th goal of the season from the penalty spot after being brought down by Day.
Villa, who will now meet the winners of the Middlesbrough-Newcastle tie, dominated the second half and Leeds were indebted to several fine saves by Day for keeping them in the hunt for so long.
