Graham Taylorโs Villa win in the Northern Semi Final of the latest incarnation of the Full Members Cup.
Villa beat Leeds in the ZDS semi final to set up a two legged final that they need to win on aggregate to make it to the final, final.
Meanwhile, the Football League is concerned about fixture congestion damaging the integrity of competition.
Gordon Cowans makes his 425th appeaarance in a Villa shirt (408 Starts) to make it W194 D101 L130, 55 Goals and 73 Assists at a goal involvement rate of one for every 3.32 games he has played so far in his Villa career.
Tony Daley secures his 50th win in a Villa shirt on his 148th appearance (120 Starts) to make it W50 D38 L60, 21 Goals and 20 Assists at a goal involvement rate of one for every 3.70 games he has played so far in his Villa career.
What they Said
"David Platt, guilty of a glaring first half miss, put the issue beyond doubt 13 minutes later when he scored his 18th goal of the season from the penalty spot after being brought down by Day."
Stuart Gray marked his return to action after a seven match absence through injury by setting Aston Villa on the way to the Northern Area final of the Zenith Cup.
Gray finally broke the resistance of the Second Division leaders in the 64th minute when he played a one-two with lan Olney to unlock Leeds' persistent offside trap before firing past former Villa keeper Mervyn Day.
David Platt, guilty of a glaring first half miss, put the issue beyond doubt 13 minutes later when he scored his 18th goal of the season from the penalty spot after being brought down by Day.
Villa, who will now meet the winners of the Middlesbrough-Newcastle tie, dominated the second half and Leeds were indebted to several fine saves by Day for keeping them in the hunt for so long.
