On This Day
Villa play out a bore draw at Wembley in the League Cup final against Everton but there are trophies won regardless as Andy Gray wins both the PFA Player of the Year and Young Player of the Year. It was a day of disaster all over at Wembley though as two coaches from the official party collide, Brian Little goes to hospital for a late ankle injury and both sets of players have to pause the game in the second half to look for a spur dropped by the marching band at half time.
Ron Saunders' Villa are held to a goal-less draw by Everton at Wembley in the League Cup final with a replay needed.
What they Said
โItโs the supporters we feel most sorry for tonight.
โThey expected us, as the favourites, to destroy Everton.
โBut we never reacted to the occasion and I am still trying to work out what went wrong.
โIt might even have been better if we had lost rather than play like that.
โJust look at them. They have forgive us already.
โAnyone would thing we have won the Cup.
โWe will have to make certain that we win at Hillsborough and do it in style.โ
Chris Nicholl.
โWe just never got started.
โThe players froze and never pressurised Everton as we all know they can.โ
Ron Saunders.
