On This Day
In a complete role reversal from the original fixture it is second tier Southampton who dominate the FA Cup third round replay at Villa Park to win in extra time.
Ron Saunders' Villa lose out to the rough house tactics of second division Southampton in the Villa Park replay as they exit the Cup at the third round stage.
What they Said
Jimmy McCalliog, the former Wolvesโ midfield player, returned to Villa Park last night and scored two vital goals to help Southampton put Aston Villa out of the FA Cup.
McCalliog produced the killer touch for the Second Division promotion chasing outfit, hitting the winning goal in the 12th minute of extra time with his shot striking a defenders boot on the way Into the net.
It was a stunning blow to Villa and despite a late brave rally they could not haul themselves back into contention to save this always amusing third round replay.
McCalliog had given Southampton a 31st minute lead which was cancelled out eight minutes later by Ray Graydon. But his dramatic winner sealed Villaโs fate.
Referee David Wallace seemed to turn a Nelsonian eye to some of the heavy tackles perpetrated by Southampton as they attempted to knock Villa out of their stride.
The unhappy overtures of this aggressive and brittle replay began as early as the sixth minute when former England international Peter Osgood chopped down John Gidman, who needed lengthy treatment before he could resume.
Villa were hard put to keep Southampton at bay in the opening stages but were denied a possible penalty after 16 minutes when centre half Mel Blyth appeared to push Graydon off the ball on the edge of the box.
Southampton continued to play in an almost buccaneering fashion and John Deehan was twice brought to the ground with fierce tackles which were again ignored by the referee.
Goalkeeper John Burridge was constantly in action and he twice dived well to his left to tip a shot and a header from England international Mike Channon away for corners.
Villa just could not find any of the form which has made them so formidable at home this season and after 31 minutes it came as no surprise when Southampton took the lead.
Osgood pushed the ball down the left wing and Channon cleverly centred for Jim McCalliog to head home from eight yards with no defenders challenging him.
The goal stunned Villa and they gradually began to find some composure, perhaps sensing that the tie was running away from them.
They equalised eight minutes later from their first positive attack on Southamptonโs goal and it came after a tragic mistake by full back David Peach.
The defender attempted to turn back a cross-field pass from Deehan to his goalkeeper lan Turner and Graydon raced in and lobbed the ball into the net.
Villa were a trifle fortunate to have squared matters, having been on the receiving end of most of the attacking pressure at this stage. But in the second half it was an entirely different story with Villa taking control and playing their best football of the game.
Graydon sent a header just over the crossbar from a right wing cross by Gidman in the 50th minute and the winger almost found the net nine minutes Inter after a tremendous midfield move involving Gidman, Carrodus and Phillips. But Southampton still continued to brace the storm as Villa did their utmost to break the stalemate.
Referee Wallace collided with Carrodus in the centre circle with four minutes of normal time remaining and needed treatment before he could continue the game.
Two players were booked by referee Wallace. Villaโs Leighton Phillips for handling in the first half and Southamptonโs Peach for a late tackle on Deehan.
