It was Villa’s bad luck to meet Malcolm Macdonald on one of his “super“ days and the England leader destroyed Villa with two goals.
The turning point came when Villa full-back Robson picked up a long ball from Mahoney and was trying to get it under control when Macdonald thundered in.
Goalkeeper Cumbes and Robson got in a tangle and Supermac slid the ball into the net.
Craig got Newcastle’s second.
Two minutes from the end Supermac streaked through again. and hit his eighth goal of the season.
Villa are still looking for their first away win of the season. It never looked Uke coming against Newcutle at St. James's Park on Saturday. Despite a bright opining Villa ct.nceded a soft goal early on and never really recovered going down 3-0. Villa conceded a third goal in the lest minute when Macdonald had the crowd chanting "Supermac" after a fantastic goal, The England leader was put In possession by Cowling and Macdonald beat almost the entire Villa defence before League tables to 1 try %rwcaraly Mldrilembro k.yertan 1 2 •iii rwtc 2 • Dirby P.M, Man City 2 I 3 Sumter 1 3 2 Ipswich 6 1 3 2 Lelcriitrr 6 0 5 1 Aston Villa 6 2 I 3 TottYaltaiM 6 1 2 3 Wol 6 1 2 3 ok ves 6 0 3 3 Ilirmtrobam a 2 4 Sheath. Utd 6 0 1 5 taking aim to lend his shot past Cumbes for Newcastle's third goal. Newcastle after two conaerutive away defeats took only five minutes to take the lead. It had been all Villa when a slip in the Villa defence between Robson and Cumbes allowed the country's top scorer Malcolm Macdonald to nip in and score after just Ave minutes. It was Macdonald's seventh goal of the season. After this Newcastle goal out of nothing Villa tried hard to get back into the game. Newcastle had been put under pressure with efforts from Phillips, Aitken and Graydon and Aitken was particularly unlucky to see his shot headed off the line. Villa were under pressure as they lot control of midfield and they were lucky not to fall further behind. The attack was making little impression on the Newcastle defence and the two best efforts came from Chris Nicholl headers from Ray Graydon's corners. But it was from the right wing that Newcastle increased their lead in 43 minutes. It was a cracker from Craig who took a pass after Gowling had beaten the Villa defence and sent home a terrific left•footed drive. There was little joy or fightbug spirit about Villa In the second half. They looked ragged in mid. field and were fighting an obvious uphill battle and could have gone further behind midway through the half. Macdonald was again left fairly .clear and he rounded goalkeeper Cumbea but with a gaping goal lifted his shot over the bar. In an effort to add some life to the Villa attack Manager. Ron Saunders, brought on substitute Sammy Morgan for his first game of the season. He replaced Keith Leonard who had a tough time against the Newcastle defence. Morgan was soon in the thick of things and got a ticking off after being involved In what could have been a nasty incident with Newcastle's Paddy Howard. Billy Bremner spurred Leeds on to their four victory a 3.0 thrashing of Wolves at Elland Road leaving them third placed in the first division two points behind leaders Manchester United. Ipswich boss Bobby Robson voiced the fairs of the other first division managers when he said yesterday: "We can't afford to let them get too far away. As far as we are con• cerned six points is quite a lot to make up even at this stags of the season." Ipswich one of the cham- pionship favourites took a point from a goalless draw at Coventry and have now gone four games without defeat.
