On This Day
Villa's first game in the first division since 1966-67 ends in unlucky defeat despite Leighton Phillips ๐ด๓ ง๓ ข๓ ท๓ ฌ๓ ณ๓ ฟ scoring Villa's first top flight goal since Barry Stobart ๐ด๓ ง๓ ข๓ ฅ๓ ฎ๓ ง๓ ฟ on 13 May 1967.
Forward Brian Little ๐ด๓ ง๓ ข๓ ฅ๓ ฎ๓ ง๓ ฟ makes his ๐ 100th start in a Villa shirt.
What they Said
โI was only following up to prevent one of Jimโs [Cumbes] big kicks.โ
Peter Lorimer.
A 46,000 CROWD acclaiming Aston Villaโs return to the First Division after eight years was stunned into disbelieving silence by the softest goal ever scored by Leeds hot-shot Peter Lorimer.
Lorimer, already on the scoresheet with the equalising penalty in the first half, could hardly believe his luck when Jim Cumbes failed to gather a back-pass from Charlie Aitken. The ball trickled from the goalkeeperโs grasp and Lorimer simply stabbed the 75th minute gift over the line.
โI was only following up to prevent one of Jimโs big kicks.โ said an astonished Lorimer.
It was a gigantic Cumbesโ kick that led to Villa taking a seventh minute lead through Leighton Phillips.
Man of the match: Billy Bremner (Leeds).
