On This Day
Villa played their first League game proper since game #1937; due to WW2, 2,674 days or 7 years, 3 months and 25 days had elapsed since the previous league game on 6th May 1939.
Legendary Villa centre forward Frank Broome made the last of his 178 appearances during which time he scored 105 goals.
Forward Johnny Dixon, 21, makes his debut for Villa to become the 396th player to play for Villa in League and Cup football. Although Dixon had appeared in the 1945-46 interim league competition, this was his first appearance in a competition proper having not played in the 1945-46 FA Cup.
Forward Tommy Dodds made his sole appearance for Villa.
