Ben Olney
Player #330 for Aston Villa, Benjamin Albert Olney, known as Ben Olney and nicknamed Big Ben, played as a goalkeeper for the club.
Ben played for Villa between 1927-28 and 1929-30 mostly as first choice ‘keeper and in so doing made 97 appearances.
Ben was born in Holborn, London on 15 March 1899 and made his debut appearance for Villa on the 31 December 1927 aged 28.
Villa had signed Ben from Derby County earlier in December 1927 and he went on to make the number one jersey his own for the rest of that season making 21 appearances through to the end of the season.
Ben was the 39th custodian of the Villa goal in League & Cup football.
Ben retained the number one spot making 43 appearances in 1929-30 and in total across his 3 seasons made 97 appearances and conceded 168 goals at a rate of 1.75 goals per game.
Ben played his final game for Villa on 1 March 1930 aged 30 before moving to Bilston United as player manager in July 1930.
Ben had played under the Billy Smith led Management Committee.
Ben passed away in Derby on 23rd September 1943 aged just 44.
