Peter Witheโs ๐ด๓ ง๓ ข๓ ฅ๓ ฎ๓ ง๓ ฟ brace saves Villa from defeat to 17th placed Norwich as Villa make it ๐ฉ four wins in ๐ eleven League games, whilst ๐ฅ losing five.
Having โฝ scored four and ๐ฅ made five goals in his ๐ last four games there are welcome rumours that Withe ๐ด๓ ง๓ ข๓ ฅ๓ ฎ๓ ง๓ ฟ is about to be offered a new contract to keep him at the club for another three years.
Midfielder Dennis Mortimer ๐ด๓ ง๓ ข๓ ฅ๓ ฎ๓ ง๓ ฟ makes his first appearance as a ๐ substitute after 405 starts in what proves to be his fianl game for the club whom he lead to League and European Cup glory.
Graham Turner ๐ด๓ ง๓ ข๓ ฅ๓ ฎ๓ ง๓ ฟ prematurely calls time on the great manโs Villa career before moving him on to Brighton & Hove Albion in August 1985 on a free transfer.
Mortimer ๐ด๓ ง๓ ข๓ ฅ๓ ฎ๓ ง๓ ฟ became the eighth member of the fourteen man League title winning squad that had now been sold under the Herbert Douglas Ellis regime. Mortimer's departure followed those of Kenny Swain ๐ด๓ ง๓ ข๓ ฅ๓ ฎ๓ ง๓ ฟ, Ken McNaught ๐ด๓ ง๓ ข๓ ณ๓ ฃ๓ ด๓ ฟ, Jimmy Rimmer ๐ด๓ ง๓ ข๓ ฅ๓ ฎ๓ ง๓ ฟ, David Geddis ๐ด๓ ง๓ ข๓ ฅ๓ ฎ๓ ง๓ ฟ, Tony Morley ๐ด๓ ง๓ ข๓ ฅ๓ ฎ๓ ง๓ ฟ, Eamonn Deacy ๐ฎ๐ช and Des Bremner ๐ด๓ ง๓ ข๓ ณ๓ ฃ๓ ด๓ ฟ.
Mortimer ๐ด๓ ง๓ ข๓ ฅ๓ ฎ๓ ง๓ ฟ left with a record of ๐ฉ W185 ๐จ D103 ๐ฅ L118, โฝ 36 Goals and ๐ฅ73 Assists.
Far less positive things could be said about Turner who whether unable, unwilling or both to keep the old guard, is now also having troubles with even the newest of recruits.
Centre back Steve Foster ๐ด๓ ง๓ ข๓ ฅ๓ ฎ๓ ง๓ ฟ 27 makes just his 17th and final appearance in a Villa shirt before moving on to Luton Town in November for ยฃ70,000 just six months after Villa had paid Brighton & Hove Albion ยฃ150,000 for his services.
Foster experienced repeated rows with a manager who had been in post for just two months and who was already patently out of his depth and taking Villa backwards. Foster was a relieved man to make a quick exit with a record of ๐ฉ W8 ๐จ D2 ๐ฅ L7 and โฝ 3 goals.
Villa then had lost regulars from their midfield and defence as yet more discontent bubbled behind the scenes; the Turner / Ellis axis, had been in place for less than 10 weeks and the wonton destruction had hardly even begun.
