MATCH SUMMARY

Referee David Letts and linesman Paul Alcock contrive to send off two Villa players in two minutes as Graham Turner's side are defeated at Portman Road to leave the 14th in the table. Paul Rideout equalised on 54โ€™ but it was controversially disallowed by the referee who subsequently incorrectly sent Peter Withe off for โ€œmaking an obscene gesture.โ€ before sending off Colin Gibson two minutes later after an unreasonable first booking.

MATCH QUOTES

โ€œAfter my goal was disallowed, I said something to the linesman and then made a gesture at him. โ€œWhen the referee [David Letts] went over, the linesman [Paul Alcock] insisted it was Peter. But it was me. Paul Rideout. โ€œThat [getting the wrong man] doesnโ€™t affect my report at all, which is already in the post. โ€œIt is up to the club and players concerned to make representations to the FA. โ€œThe linesman [Paul Alcock] was adamant in his evidence that it was Withe and told Withe so.โ€ David Letts. โ€œBoth Withe and Rideout will be submitting their version of the incident to the FA [after David Letts and linesman Paul Alcockโ€™s mistake]. It means, of course, that Rideout will have to admit was the offender.โ€ Secretary Steve Stride. โ€œIt clear in my own mind that Withe did not make any gesture. โ€œFour of us in the dug-out all shouted to the linesman nearest us; โ€˜He's got the wrong manโ€™.โ€ Graham Turner. โ€œAll I said was โ€˜Look ref, the linesmanโ€™s flaggingโ€™. โ€œThe referee [David Letts] turned round and said: Iโ€™m booking you for dissent.โ€™ โ€œI didnโ€™t swear at all.โ€ Colin Gibson โ€œWitheโ€™s dismissal was a case of mistaken identity. โ€œIt was Rideout who made the gesture. โ€œI said to the ref: โ€˜Are you sure itโ€™s Withe?โ€™. โ€œNo one should make a gesture at an official, but only the linesman [Paul Alcock] saw it. โ€œHe [Paul Alcock] could have let it go. โ€œItโ€™s ridiculous that players are booked for not getting back ten yards at a free kick, yet an Ipswich player made a terrible tackled on Dennis Mortimer and got away with it. โ€œWithe sat had head bowed in the dressing room, not saying a word. โ€œHeโ€™s only just come back from injury and now we are going to lose him for something he did not do. โ€œPlayers canโ€™t appeal any more. โ€œIn the past you could please for leniency or even sanity. โ€œBut not any more.โ€ Allan Evans.
