MATCH SUMMARY
Referee David Letts and linesman Paul Alcock contrive to send off two Villa players in two minutes as Graham Turner's side are defeated at Portman Road to leave the 14th in the table. Paul Rideout equalised on 54’ but it was controversially disallowed by the referee who subsequently incorrectly sent Peter Withe off for “making an obscene gesture.” before sending off Colin Gibson two minutes later after an unreasonable first booking.

MATCHDAY QUOTES
“After my goal was disallowed, I said something to the linesman and then made a gesture at him.
“When the referee [David Letts] went over, the linesman [Paul Alcock] insisted it was Peter. But it was me.
Paul Rideout.
“That [getting the wrong man] doesn’t affect my report at all, which is already in the post.
“It is up to the club and players concerned to make representations to the FA.
“The linesman [Paul Alcock] was adamant in his evidence that it was Withe and told Withe so.”
David Letts.
“Both Withe and Rideout will be submitting their version of the incident to the FA [after David Letts and linesman Paul Alcock’s mistake]. It means, of course, that Rideout will have to admit was the offender.”
Secretary Steve Stride.
“It clear in my own mind that Withe did not make any gesture.
“Four of us in the dug-out all shouted to the linesman nearest us; ‘He's got the wrong man’.”
Graham Turner.
“All I said was ‘Look ref, the linesman’s flagging’.
“The referee [David Letts] turned round and said: I’m booking you for dissent.’
“I didn’t swear at all.”
Colin Gibson
“Withe’s dismissal was a case of mistaken identity.
“It was Rideout who made the gesture.
“I said to the ref: ‘Are you sure it’s Withe?’.
“No one should make a gesture at an official, but only the linesman [Paul Alcock] saw it.
“He [Paul Alcock] could have let it go.
“It’s ridiculous that players are booked for not getting back ten yards at a free kick, yet an Ipswich player made a terrible tackled on Dennis Mortimer and got away with it.
“Withe sat had head bowed in the dressing room, not saying a word.
“He’s only just come back from injury and now we are going to lose him for something he did not do.
“Players can’t appeal any more.
“In the past you could please for leniency or even sanity.
“But not any more.”
Allan Evans.
