MATCH SUMMARY
Villa suffer a shocking, but less than surprising, Old Trafford refereeing injustice as Manchester United’s first goal is from a cross clearly delivered from beyond the byeline by Steve Coppell. The goal comes before a thuggish Joe Jordan - scorer of both the home team’s goals - leaves his mark on Allan Evans, for which the Villa man is eventually booked after trying to take out his retaliation. Villa remain fifth but have to share the place with Wolves who have played a game less than Ron Saunders’ side.

ON THIS DAY
Ron Saunders' Villa lose for the first time in four to make it fourteen wins, fourteen draws and eleven defeats in thirty nine League matches this season. The defeat however was all the more poignant as it proved to be the final game for Villa great Brian Little who was forced to retire aged just 26 through injury. Little had played for Villa between 1971-72 and 1979-80 making 301 appearances and scoring 82 goals.

Referee: Michael Lowe | 🏴 | Sheffield, 1972–1982 🆘
🆘 A truly woeful and highly suspect refereeing performance from Lowe sees a goal awarded despite being delivered from behind the bye-line, an unpunished typically thuggish performance from Joe Jordan and a free kick derived goal that never should have been. To boot Lowe watched on unconcerned as Jordan ruled Evans out for the remainder of the season with a broken nose before the Sheffield official decided the most appropriate reaction was to book Evans for retaliation. Truly shocking.
