MATCHDAY QUOTES

"I lost my rag. What really hurts is the fact that I will lose my place through suspension after just getting my big chance."

Brendan Ormsby.

*Birmingham Daily Post*
Monday, 29 October 1979

Former England Youth captain Brendan Ormsby left Molineux on Saturday nursing a broken nose but considerably the wiser after his clash with John Richards which resulted in the pair of them being sent off, writes lAN WILLARS.

Ormsby, just 19, and a promising prospect, earned a lot of respect afterwards for the way he accepted his share of the blame for the fracas.

"I lost my rag. What really hurts is the fact that I will lose my place through suspension after just getting my big chance."

Richards was gagged by manager John Barnwell from making any comment about the explosive 60th minute incident which marred a marvellously competitive 100th local derby between Wolves and Aston Villa.

But it goes almost without saying that he most probably regretted his action as well particularly as he now misses tomorrow night's Fourth Round League Cup tie at Queen's Park Rangers.

Wolves should, of course, have buried their old rivals in the first 20 minutes with Andy Gray giving his former club-mates a real fright. Gray scored in the 15th minute after Daniel had back-headed a free kick by Parkin and it seemed that Wolves were going to win by a mile.

Four booked

But Villa suddenly fired into action. It may have been that referee Lloyd stirred them with his finicky and over-fussy handling of the game which saw four players - Wolves' Palmer and Berry and Villa's Evans and Mortimer - booked in the first 35 minutes for offences which really merited only a lecture.

Villa achieved their equaliser with 18-year-old Gary Shaw scoring almost on the stroke of half time with a left foot shot which Bradshaw should have saved. So honours finished even and that was just about right on the day.

Even England team manager Ron Greenwood looked satisfied and that was no doubt because of the form of his former captain Emlyn Hughes. He had probably his best game since arriving at Wolves from Liverpool.
