Match Report:
Fletcher Boyd scored an audacious strike from the halfway line as Aston Villa recorded an impressive 3-1 victory over Crystal Palace in the Under-18 Premier League South.
The summer signing scored his first goal for the club in stunning style, firing over Palace goalkeeper Harry Whitworth from 50 yards to put Villa into a 2-0 lead before the break.
Markie Meade had earlier opened the scoring courtesy of a well-taken finish in the 28th minute, with Jasper Judd halving the advantage just before the hour mark at Bodymoor Heath.
But Junior Wilson headed home in the 75th minute to secure the spoils and clinch back-to-back wins for the Young Lions.
Villa started the encounter on the front foot, Meade’s low strike and Woody Burgess from close range testing Palace ‘keeper Whitworth inside the opening stages.
Alfie Lynskey was next to force the Palace stopper into action in the 14th minute as the Young Lions enjoyed a positive start.
However, the hosts were indebted to two saves from Owen Asemota in a matter of minutes midway through the first half, using his feet to deny Makai Bernard-Ferguson before tipping over a header from Palace danger man Ben Casey.
And the double stop proved crucial as Villa opened the scoring six minutes later.
Jack McGrath did well in the middle of the park and turned neatly before delivering an inch-perfect ball into the path of Meade, who timed his run before converting a neat finish with the outside of his right foot.
Farid Addey sent a far-post header off target from a corner shortly afterwards, before the Villans doubled their tally in style.
Meade’s challenge poked the ball to Boyd inside Villa’s own half, with the forward taking a touch and, spotting Whitworth off his line, launched a stunning strike from the halfway line which flew over Palace’s keeper and into the net.
Palace started the second half determined to get back into the encounter, and Casey rounded Asemota only to see his effort cleared off the line by Burgess.
Donte Martin then struck the woodwork for the Eagles before Judd almost immediately reduced the arrears in the 59th minute.
The Palace right-back cut inside on the edge of the area and fired a low strike into the bottom corner from 20 yards.
Asemota stood firm to preserve Villa’s advantage, and his resolve proved crucial as the home side added a third in the 75th minute.
Max Jenner sent over a left-footed cross, which was met by the head of Wilson, and he converted a header from six yards.
Asemota again stood firm to thwart Casey before the Palace frontman was denied once more in injury time as Villa claimed all three points.
