Match Report:
Villa returned to winning ways in the Under-18 Premier League on Saturday afternoon, edging a thrilling affair away at Norwich City with a 3-2 triumph.
Rodrigo Fortes’ second goal in a week put Richard Beale’s Young Lions ahead in the opening period, before Finlay Corke drew the hosts level just after the break.
Lennon Melhuish’s first Under-18s goal put Villa back ahead shortly after, with Markie Meade’s strike ensuring Corke’s stoppage-time penalty proved little more than a consolation at the Avant Training Centre.
The victory took the Villans up to 10th in the table, with two wins and two defeats from their opening four league outings.
The visitors steadily built throughout the opening period, dominating possession and looking to carve out openings.
It took 38 minutes for them to break the deadlock. Fortes, having notched Villa’s first goal in Tuesday night’s Vertu Trophy defeat to Crawley Town, scored his second goal in five days, finding the bottom corner from close range to put his side in command at the break.
Norwich needed just three minutes of the second period to draw level, however, restoring parity when striker Corke was found by Finlay Oligbo and made no mistake to finish.
But the equaliser kicked the Villans back into gear, and just five minutes later, they were back in front, Melhuish marking his first Under-18 Premier League start by drilling into the bottom corner from the edge of the area after Meade had teed him up.
And with 11 minutes left to play, the points were all but secured when Meade notched his first goal of the season to make it three, having been found by Ollie Bindley.
There was still time, however, to make for a nervy ending, as Corke went to ground inside the area and the referee pointed to the spot.
The Norwich forward sent his kick straight down the middle to further reduce the arrears, but Villa successfully held out for the remaining three minutes to seal victory.
