What they Said
Post Match
*Saturday, 1 May 2021*
*Villa manager Dean Smith*
โ"I thought it was a really good performance which was the main thing. We have lacked a little consistency of late. We took the game to a strong Everton team.
โ"I thought we created the better chances in the first half then we were denied by a really good goalkeeping performance. It was a great goal to win it with.
โ"Everybody will find it difficult without Jack Grealish. He is a very talented player but we have tried to build some consistency and momentum.
โ"We wanted to be on the front foot and continue the performance from West Brom. We made a few mistakes for their goals but we knew that we were playing well and needed to take it into today's game against a top eight team.
โ"That's what Ollie [Watkins] can do - pick pocket the ball off centre-halves - but his all round game is getting better and better.
Anwar El Ghazi showed the class he has. We want to see him do that more often but with the goals he has it shows he's done okay."
โ"It was a good win. It was a really good game of football and both teams tried to win. I think we deserved it on the balance of chances. Jordan Pickford was in really good form and denied Ollie Watkins time and time again.
โ"It's easy for people to say we haven't got anything to play for but we want to finish as high as we can. We want to regain that momentum and consistency we had earlier in the season.
โ"I've said it before but for me Ollie Watkins is one of the best pressing forwards in the Premier League. I had no doubts he could come and do this in the Premier League.
โ"He is better than he was. He would go home and beat himself up but he gets over that a lot more now and learns. He is a really humble guy and is getting his rewards now."
โOn his England hopes: "That will be up to Gareth Southgate but he has seen first hand what he's got in the last squad. If he trained like he does at Aston Villa he would have certainly impressed."

*Goalscorer Ollie Watkins*
โ"Itโs been a long time coming. We havenโt been playing too well of late, so it was nice to get three points away from home.
โ"I think I could have done better with a few chances. I should be leaving the pitch with two or three goals, but the most important thing is we got the three points.
โ"I think any striker will say they can do a little better with the chances I had. I just have to keep working on it. No matter whoโs watching, you just have to work hard and do your best."
โOn his England hopes:
"Any international game is magical. Iโm just focusing on my club form now, trying to push us into the European spots. I think itโs a possibility. Games are coming thick and fast now. If we get a couple of wins it puts us right back up there."
โ"I thought we were really good today. Our build-up from the back was better than usual, weโve been working on that this week. We were looking to get up the pitch gradually rather than going too gung-ho.
โ"Running in behind is one of my strengths, the timing of the long balls. Thatโs where I come into the game and can create chances from there. We did that really well today. I think we could have got a few more actually.
โ"Iโve got to take every game as it comes and focus on my club form."

โEverton boss Carlo Ancelotti says his side missed a big opportunity to stay in contention for a finish in the European places as the Toffees lost at home to Aston Villa.
โAnwar El Ghazi's superb second-half strike secured victory for the visitors and dealt a significant blow to Everton's chances of finishing in the top four of the Premier League.
โEl Ghazi curled home from the edge of the box with 10 minutes remaining to secure Villa only their third win in their last 11 league games.
โEverton had started the day six points off the top four but this defeat, coupled with a win for Chelsea, means they are now nine points adrift of Thomas Tuchel's side.
โ"We lost a big opportunity to stay in the fight," Ancelotti told BBC Sport. "We're still in the fight but with less possibility and more difficulties.
โ"We didn't start the game as well as this kind of game demands. It was an important game and would have been an important result."
โEl Ghazi's winner was the only highlight of a relatively flat second half that failed to build on a pulsating first.
โOllie Watkins opened the scoring when he pounced on a mistake by Mason Holgate before slotting past Jordan Pickford.
โHowever, Everton hit back soon after when Dominic Calvert-Lewin powered home a header following a corner.
โHome keeper Pickford then twice denied Watkins with excellent saves to keep Villa at bay, while ex-Everton midfielder Ross Barkley struck the post with a low effort from range.
โBut despite Pickford's best efforts Villa secured the three points when El Ghazi struck late on.
โThe defeat leaves Everton eighth on 52 points while Villa are four points behind in ninth.
โPickford heroics can't save Everton
โ
To have still been in the conversation for a top-four finish at this stage of the season is impressive for Everton, but the Toffees will perhaps wonder what might have been if their home form had been just marginally better than it is.
โThe Toffees have collected just 19 points from 17 home matches, with eight of those games ending in defeat.
โAfter such an impressive win at Arsenal last time out, Everton never really got going against a Villa side that looked hungrier for the victory from the outset.
โIndeed, the visitors could have won by a bigger margin but for some excellent saves by Pickford.
โHe came off his line quickly to prevent Watkins from adding a second not long after opening the scoring, and produced a stunning save to somehow deny the striker again at the back post.
โIt was arguably Pickford's best performance of the season and bodes well for England with the European Championship starting in just over a month.
โWatkins impresses as Southgate watches
โ
Another player with European Championship aspirations is Villa striker Watkins, and this performance will have done his chances of convincing Gareth Southgate to make a place for him in his squad no harm.
โThe England boss was watching in the stands as Watkins took his tally in an excellent debut Premier League season to 13 goals, and he could easily have added a couple more to that total.
โBut aside from his goals, Watkins offers impressive work-rate in attack and he was a constant menace for Everton with his pressing from the front.
โHe was there to steal the ball from a hesitant Holgate to open the scoring and, for a 20-minute period in the first half, the Toffees were unable to get a handle on his determined runs off the ball.
โIt was another impressive display from the former Brentford striker and with games against Manchester United, Tottenham and Chelsea still to come, Watkins has plenty more chances to further underline his credentials to Southgate.
โ"I thought he was good and difficult to handle. It's what we paid a lot of money for," Smith said of his ยฃ28m summer signing from Brentford.
โ"I knew what he was and what he was like as a person, and how he wanted to grow and get better. I thought he was outstanding tonight."
