On This Day
Villa open the Covid affected season late and in curious circumstances as they face and beat League one Burton in the EFL Cup.
Centre forward Ollie Watkins makes a goalscoring Villa debut aged 25 after joining from Brentford for a club record fee of £27,720,000 to become the 946th player to play for Villa in first team League or Cup football.
Neil Taylor makes his 100th appearance in a Villa shirt (92 Starts) to make it W48 D21 L31, 4 Assists, 14 Bookings and 1 Red Card so far in his Villa career.
Ørjan Nyland makes his 36th and final appearance for Villa (34 Starts) to make it W12 D12 L12, 54 Goals Conceded and 8 Clean Sheets.
Keinan Davis scores his 5th goal for the club on his 68th appearance (25 Starts) to make it W29 D16 L23, 5 Goals, 4 Assists and 2 Booking so far in his Villa career.
Marvelous Nakamba secures his 10th win in a Villa shirt on his 35th appearance (25 Starts) to make it W10 D7 L18, 0 Goals, 0 Assists and 7 Bookings so far in his Villa career.
Midfielder Jacob Ramsey, 19, makes his first start for Villa after three previous appearances as substitute.
What they Said
"Villa, who had been camped in the Burton box for most of the second half, added a third two minutes into injury time through substitute Davis, who had come on for Watkins on 71 minutes."
"Grealish stars and Watkins scores on his debut as Villa progress"
Aston Villa captain Jack Grealish scored with a fine late volley as his side came from behind to knock League One side Burton Albion out of the Carabao Cup.
Home defender Colin Daniel stung Villa with his first goal for the club after just 64 seconds to create hopes of another upset, like two seasons ago.
But £28m record signing Ollie Watkins levelled on 37 minutes on his debut.
Then, after Grealish's strike, Keinan Davis added an injury-time third.
Burton, who beat Villa 1-0 at the Pirelli Stadium at the same stage of the EFL Cup two seasons ago, made four changes from Saturday's 2-1 defeat at Fleetwood.
And it was one of them, defender Daniel, who got the evening off to such a dramatic start.
Villa failed to clear their lines in Burton's first attack and Daniel arrived on the left corner of the box to rocket a superb finish into the top corner.
Watkins equalised when Grealish's neat reverse ball freed Neil Taylor to cross from the left.
And, on the day he marked his long-term commitment to the club by signing a five-year contract, new England midfielder Grealish then put his side ahead, lashing a low left-foot volley into the bottom right corner on 88 minutes to end fear of a penalty shootout.
Villa, who had been camped in the Burton box for most of the second half, added a third two minutes into injury time through substitute Davis, who had come on for Watkins on 71 minutes.
Villa must travel again in the third round to meet the winners of Wednesday's tie between Bristol City and Northampton Town.
But, before then, Villa will be more concerned with next Monday's Premier League campaign opener at home to Sheffield United.
