TEAM NEWS

With captain Jack Grealish once again ruled out through injury despite Dean Smith's expectations that he would return after the international break. Smith, facing his worst spell, and most worrying spell as Villa boss named a largely unchanged line up with El Ghazi replacing Trézéguet.

Mounting criticism of Smith's 'creative' players El Ghazi, Trézéguet and Traoré together with his insistence on playing John McGinn in a deep midfield position despite his sparkling form as an attacking midfielder at international level, meant a change in tactics and deployment was expected and necessary in order for Smith to deliver a result against bottom three side Fulham.

A bench of only moderate quality, with a significant chunk facing the end of their contracts and/or Villa careers meant options to change a game were once more limited - a situation exacerbated by Smith's tendency to use substitutions as if by rote who had made little or no impact across the previous ten fixtures.

Harsh as it was, Smith was under real pressure to prove the doubters wrong after a fairy tale custodianship of Villa had begun to show signs of souring.

MATCHDAY QUOTES

Post Match
*Sunday, 4 April 2021*
*Villa manager Dean Smith*

"It was a laboured game in general from both sides, we're at that stage of the season. You want your subs to come on and make an impact and they did that.

"Trezeguet was key, he came on and made the difference. He took his opportunity, all three who came on did. It's a mistake from Tyrone Mings that doesn't happen often, he's very pleased we turned it around. There weren't many chances in the game.

"After the restart last year we had 10 games left and Trezeguet came up big for us. He should have had three or four goals already this season so he'll be pleased with his impact today.

"Our season has been up and down, but we can produce moments of brilliance to win games. We've needed to win without Jack Grealish, people say we can't play without him but we've got goals in the team."

"I'm not sure [the substitutions] were inspired but they made the impact you want. The minimum you want is for them to run more and faster than the person who's just come off. Trezeguet has been unfortunate this season, he's missed a lot of chances, but he's scored two today and won us the game.

"I thought the performance was a little bit laboured from both teams. There's a lot of teams battling for performances at the moment.

"It's been a long hard season. We were hoping the break had done us good and we showed spells of energy in the first half.

"All results are important, they're hard to come by in the Premier League and we've got a tough game next up against the champions. It was a hard fought win and it's nice to come back from behind because we haven't done that this season."

On Jack Grealish's fresh injury concerns: "It only happened yesterday when he was sore, so we'll probably go and get that scanned and see where he is."

"He had trained in the week but he had some discomfort in training yesterday. He was all for playing but had discomfort and we have to be cautious. We'll see how it goes."
---
*Sunday, 4 April 2021*
*Villa's leading goalscorer Ollie Watkins*

"Coming off the back of the international break, we've had a little bit of time to gather ourselves, refresh and go again.

"Our aim between now and the end of the season is to win as many games as possible. We know we're capable of it.

"We started the season strongly and had a bit of a dip. Hopefully I can score more goals and help and the team."

"Without the substitutes we probably would have lost that game. They changed the game and got us back into it. They had fresh legs and energy, and Keinan Davis is such a strong guy with a presence up front. He won the ball back at a crucial time and it turned into a goal.

"When we got into the final third our movement was a bit slow. It just wasn't falling for us. But we dug in, got the chances in the end and saw the game out.

"Trezeguet works so hard so he deserves it. He's always getting in there and credit to him.

"We haven't come from a goal down and won very often so we've shown character. In the last few weeks we've been trying but it's not come off for us. Hopefully we can go on a run now and get back to how we were playing at the start of the season."
---
*Sunday, 4 April 2021*
*Villa goalscorer Trézéguet*

"It was an amazing game, I am happy for the three points and my goals. I haven't scored for a long time but I believe I will score, I knew it would come.

"I hope I continue at the same level now and all of the team will go forward. This game was very important to give us confidence.

"Jack Grealish is very important, we miss him but we win without him today."

Fulham boss Scott Parker accused his players of not being "streetwise enough" as their relegation fears intensified after defeat at Aston Villa.

The Cottagers were on course to leapfrog Newcastle into 17th spot when Aleksandar Mitrovic pounced on an error by Tyrone Mings to fire the visitors ahead at Villa Park.

However, substitute Trezeguet scored twice as Villa hit three in the final 12 minutes to leave Fulham three points from a position of safety.

"At certain moments in the game, you have to understand where you are and what you need and we didn't manage that," said Parker.

"Sometimes you need to be horrible, play the game in the right territory. We were walking away with one point and then we were sloppy.

"It's a young team but we were naive and made silly mistakes. After the first goal, we dropped our intensity and it affected us too much and we weren't streetwise enough."

Fulham were good value for their lead before capitulating.

Mings, captaining Villa in Jack Grealish's absence, messed up attempting a back pass to Emiliano Martinez, allowing Mitrovic to sneak in, go round the goalkeeper and score.

However, Mings atoned for his error to provide the cross for Trezeguet to equalise with a first-time shot before the Egypt midfielder scored the second three minutes later from an assist by fellow substitute Keinan Davis.

England forward Ollie Watkins added the third from inside the six-yard area.

On the stroke of half-time, with the game at 0-0, Villa thought they had won a penalty when Watkins went down under Mario Lemina's challenge.

However, referee Andy Madley overruled himself after viewing a replay on the pitchside monitor.

Trezeguet inspires late Villa flourish

Without inspirational captain Grealish for the seventh straight game, Villa looked in a rut when they went behind just after the hour mark.

Dean Smith was hoping to welcome back Grealish from a shin injury but a setback in training on the eve of the game dashed the Villa manager's plans.

Villa have struggled without the England midfielder, winning just one of their previous six matches, and they looked on course for another disappointing result until Trezeguet was sent on shortly after Mitrovic put Fulham ahead.

He scored twice in the space of three minutes to turn the game on its head before playing a part in the third goal by laying it off to Bertrand Traore, who crossed for Watkins to score.

With a trip to Liverpool and a home game against Manchester City coming up, this was a welcome return to winning ways.

Having moved onto 44 points after 29 games - 18 more than they had at the same stage last season - Villa are just five points off a European spot.

They will hope to have Grealish back in time for next weekend's visit to Anfield but they at least proved against Fulham that they can win without their prized asset.

Huge blow for Fulham

With Newcastle again failing to win earlier on Sunday, this game represented Fulham's best chance yet of climbing out of the bottom three, where they have been anchored since 20 December 2020.

It appeared to be going to plan for the visitors when Mitrovic scored.

Elevated to the starting line-up after scoring five goals in three World Cup qualifiers for Serbia, the former Newcastle player justified his inclusion with his goal.

But Fulham, not for the first time this season, failed to see the game out, Villa scoring three times in the space of nine minutes to take the match away from them.

Only Southampton (18) and Brighton (17) have dropped more points from winning positions in the Premier League this season than Parker's side.

Three points from a position of safety with seven matches left, including a home game against Manchester United, as well as trips to Arsenal and Chelsea, Fulham are in big trouble.

Their last match of the season, at home to Newcastle on 23 May, already looks as if it could be highly significant, but Parker has to make sure Fulham are still in with a chance of staying up by then.

Aston Villa boss Dean Smith:

"It's a big win - a win full of character in the end. We believe we've got a quality squad.

"It was certainly a very good last 20 minutes or so. Sometimes you need players to make an impact from the bench and the three who came on certainly did that and lifted our performance.

"The subs changed the game for us. Trezeguet came on and did what I asked of him - made an impact. He has been a little unfortunate at times this season and I am really pleased for him."
